We are seeking a Visual Communications Specialist to join our team in VICTORIA, British Columbia, Canada.
The Visual Communications Specialist leads the development of both print and digital communication products for BC's public sector pension plans. Working closely with business and product teams in a hybrid environment, the role provides design services across a wide range of mediums.
The position is responsible for designing and advising on all stages of product development from concept to completion including press-ready print files, web-ready content and motion graphics. The deliverables communicate complex policy and financial information accurately, creatively, and simply. This work requires a formal understanding of graphic design as a craft that balances communication, creativity, data visualization and technical outcomes.
Hybrid Work Model
This position is located in our Victoria, BC office. You will have the opportunity to work part of the time on-campus and part of the time off-campus. Guidelines and requirements for in-office presence are determined by operational need and vary according to the unique needs of each business area.
- Provides advisory services to stakeholders in planning and developing visual communications products, including defining audiences, messaging, timelines, and appropriate deliverables.
- Consults with clients to conceptualize effective methods for communicating complex financial information.
- Gathers feedback and provides expert guidance during the creative process to ensure materials support business objectives.
- Develops and recommends visual concepts, graphic strategies, layouts, and design approaches.
- Designs and produces print and digital materials including reports, presentations, brochures, illustrations, charts, and tables and sources stock photography and vector assets.
- Coordinates scheduling, revisions, and production workflows with stakeholders while meeting mandated deadlines.
- Prepares press‑ready files, approves proofs, and works with internal staff and external vendors to ensure on‑time, on‑budget delivery.
- Maintains version control and archives materials for legal and research purposes.
- Ensures all deliverables meet required design specifications.
- Leads visual concept development for pension plan branding, including maintaining the Graphic Standards Guide and templates.
- Revises materials to reflect legislative updates, pension plan rule changes, and corporate directives.
- Ensures all products comply with corporate graphic standards.
- Prepares production‑ready files for printers, approves final proofs and deliverables, and confirms materials are received and ready for distribution.
- Coordinates with the web team to ensure approved content is uploaded and that current versions are posted across corporate websites.
- Provides advice, training, and instruction on graphic design and publishing tools and visual communication best practices.
- Acts as a creative development resource for the organization.
- Researches and recommends software upgrades and purchases.
- Creates presentation materials for executives and plan staff.
- Provides quality assurance on presentations to ensure compliance with corporate graphic standards.
Education
- Post-secondary credential in graphic design or visual communications. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Experience
- Two years of experience that must include:
- Designing and producing visual communications across multiple media (print, web, digital and motion graphics).
- Creating production-ready files for digital and offset printing.
- Using Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign, Acrobat Pro, Photoshop and Illustrator.
- Using M365 suite of applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Using After Effects is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to interpret and analyze client needs within a corporate context and provide advice to help them meet their objectives through the effective use of visual communications.
- In-depth understanding of the requirements of printing methods.
- Knowledge of typography, illustration and graphic design principles and techniques.
- Ability to communicate by providing and obtaining information in a timely manner, and at an appropriate level/format, while maintaining confidentiality.
- Ability to work independently, organizing workload effectively and collaborative with other designers.
- Ability to pay attention to fine detail and accuracy within multiple conflicting/simultaneous deadlines.
- Ability to assess audience needs to produce audience-appropriate deliverables.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication and technical skills with the ability to advise on projects and develop new product designs.
- Demonstrated ability to quickly grasp complex concepts and translate them into illustrations and/or infographics.
- Ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships with branch staff, all levels of staff in the corporation and partners, both internal and external to the corporation.
- Ability to learn new technologies, skills and concepts.
