About the role
We are seeking a Manager, Core Platform Engineering to lead the evolution of MUFG’s core data platform capabilities across our Data Marketplace. This role is critical to building a secure, scalable, and reliable platform foundation that enables teams to publish, discover, and consume high quality data products efficiently in a regulated financial services environment.
You will set direction across core platform domains including Build & CI/CD, Raw Data Services, Data Modelling, and Reporting & Consumption, delivering reusable, service oriented data capabilities that reduce duplication and accelerate time to value across MUFG.
This is a leadership role combining platform strategy, engineering excellence, operational reliability, and people leadership, with strong engagement across architecture, security, governance, and delivery teams.
What you’ll be responsible for
Core platform strategy & leadership
- Define and own the core platform engineering strategy and multi quarter roadmap across Build, Raw Data Services, Data Modelling, and Reporting.
- Partner with product, architecture, and domain teams to establish clear platform boundaries, service ownership, and standard integration patterns.
- Set and manage service level objectives (availability, latency, data freshness), prioritising work based on reliability, regulatory obligations, and client impact.
Platform engineering & service delivery
- Lead the design and delivery of agnostic, reusable data services including ingestion, validation, transformation, metadata, access, and observability.
- Own Build platform capabilities (CI/CD pipelines, environments, templates) to enable safe and efficient delivery of data pipelines and products.
- Deliver and evolve Raw Data Services providing governed access to trusted datasets with clear contracts, lineage, and quality signals.
- Enable consistent data modelling through shared standards, reference models, and transformation frameworks.
- Support reporting and analytics consumption through semantic layers, certified datasets, and performance optimised patterns.
Reliability, security & governance by design
- Embed security, privacy, and regulatory controls into platform services, working closely with risk, compliance, and security teams.
- Implement strong platform observability, proactive incident management, and continuous improvement practices.
- Define and enforce platform standards (schemas, contracts, versioning, quality checks) to ensure interoperability and trust.
- Track and report on operational KPIs including reliability, throughput, cost efficiency, and adoption.
People leadership & engineering excellence
- Lead, coach, and develop a high performing core platform engineering team.
- Establish and embed modern engineering practices including secure SDLC, automation, code quality, and documentation.
Balance run the platform responsibilities with strategic platform enhancements across multiple delivery streams.
Stakeholder engagement & enablement
- Build strong partnerships with Data Marketplace domain leads, architecture, governance, and security teams.
- Translate stakeholder and client needs into clear platform capabilities, roadmaps, and measurable outcomes.
- Provide clear service documentation and onboarding pathways to drive adoption and reduce time to build for data product teams.
What you’ll bring
- Core Platform Leadership Experience: Ability to set direction and drive alignment across Build, Raw Data Services, Data Modelling, and Reporting.
- Service-Oriented Data Engineering background: Strong grounding in designing reusable, agnostic data services and platform APIs with clear contracts.
- Experience in Operational Excellence: Proven experience with SRE practices, observability, incident management, and service KPIs in data platforms.
- Risk, Security & Governance exposure: Strong understanding of regulated data environments, access controls, and audit requirements.
- Extensive experience leading data platform and/or core platform engineering teams in complex enterprise environments.
- Demonstrated success delivering shared platform services used by multiple teams/clients, with strong stakeholder management and prioritisation discipline.
- Strong engineering judgement across data ingestion, transformation, modelling, and reporting/consumption patterns, including cost and performance optimisation.
- A collaborative leader who influences across boundaries and drives clarity in ambiguous problem spaces.
