Summary
The Product Manager is responsible for leading the development, delivery, and continuous improvement of products and capabilities within complex Defence and Government environments. Operating with a high degree of autonomy, the role drives product strategy, stakeholder engagement, and delivery outcomes to ensure solutions align with operational requirements, user needs, and organisational objectives.
Based in Canberra, this role works closely with technical, operational, and business stakeholders to manage the full product lifecycle, balancing strategic priorities, customer outcomes, delivery constraints, and capability objectives. The successful candidate will support the delivery of innovative and sustainable solutions that enhance operational effectiveness and support Defence capability outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain product strategies, roadmaps, and delivery plans aligned to organisational priorities and customer requirements.
- Manage the end-to-end product lifecycle from concept, design, and prioritisation through to deployment, sustainment, and continuous improvement.
- Engage with stakeholders, users, and delivery teams to define product vision, requirements, and success measures.
- Collaborate with engineering, architecture, delivery, and operational teams to translate business needs into product capabilities and backlog priorities.
- Conduct market analysis, user research, and competitive assessments to identify opportunities, risks, and improvement initiatives.
- Monitor product performance, user feedback, and operational outcomes to inform prioritisation and future enhancements.
- Facilitate prioritisation decisions balancing customer value, technical feasibility, risk, budget, and delivery timelines.
- Support governance, reporting, and assurance activities across product and capability delivery functions.
- Prepare and present product updates, roadmaps, and delivery outcomes to senior stakeholders and governance forums.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives across product management and delivery practices.
Skills & Experience
- Demonstrated experience managing products, capabilities, or digital services within complex enterprise, Government, or Defence environments.
- Strong understanding of product management frameworks, agile delivery methodologies, and lifecycle management practices.
- Experience working across multidisciplinary teams including engineering, delivery, operations, and business stakeholders.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and make informed decisions in dynamic and high-tempo environments.
- Strong stakeholder engagement, facilitation, negotiation, and communication skills.
- Proven analytical and problem-solving capability with experience using data and user feedback to drive product decisions.
- Experience preparing roadmaps, business cases, reporting artefacts, and governance documentation.
- Familiarity with agile tools and delivery platforms such as Jira, Confluence, Azure DevOps, or similar.
Qualifications
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in Business, Information Technology, Engineering, Project Management, or a related discipline.
- Minimum 5+ years’ experience in Product Management, Capability Management, or Digital Delivery roles.
- Certifications in Agile, Scrum, SAFe, PRINCE2, or Product Management disciplines are advantageous.
- Experience working within Australian Government or Defence environments is highly desirable.
- Eligibility to obtain and maintain an Australian Government Security Clearance.
