The ICT Systems Administrator is responsible for the operation, administration, and support of enterprise ICT systems within complex Defence and Government environments. Operating with a high degree of autonomy, this role ensures the availability, performance, security, and integrity of server, network, and cloud infrastructure supporting critical operational services.
Based in Canberra, this position contributes to the sustainment and optimisation of ICT environments through effective systems administration, proactive monitoring, incident resolution, and participation in lifecycle management activities including upgrades, migrations, and configuration management.
Key Responsibilities
- Administer and maintain enterprise server, network, and virtualised infrastructure to ensure high availability, performance, and reliability.
- Monitor system health, performance, and security, proactively identifying and resolving issues.
- Provide advanced technical support for complex hardware, software, and infrastructure incidents and service requests.
- Implement, manage, and maintain system security controls in alignment with Defence cybersecurity policies and frameworks.
- Support planning and execution of system upgrades, migrations, patching, and configuration changes.
- Maintain accurate system documentation including configurations, procedures, and operational runbooks.
- Conduct regular system audits, capacity reviews, and performance assessments to identify optimisation opportunities.
- Collaborate with technical teams, service desk, and stakeholders to ensure effective systems integration and service delivery.
- Contribute to incident, problem, and change management processes in accordance with ITIL-aligned practices.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance system reliability, automation, and operational efficiency.
Skills & Experience
- Demonstrated experience in ICT systems administration within enterprise, Defence, or regulated environments.
- Strong knowledge of Windows and/or Linux server administration in production environments.
- Experience managing virtualisation platforms (e.g. VMware, Hyper-V) and/or cloud infrastructure environments.
- Solid understanding of networking fundamentals, system integration, and infrastructure support.
- Experience applying cybersecurity principles including access control, patching, and system hardening.
- Ability to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues in high-pressure operational environments.
- Experience working within ITIL-aligned service management frameworks (incident, change, problem).
- Strong documentation, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Ability to work independently while contributing to broader team objectives.
Qualifications
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
- Minimum 5+ years’ experience in ICT Systems Administration or Infrastructure Support roles.
- Industry certifications (e.g. Microsoft, Linux, VMware, AWS, ITIL Foundation) highly desirable.
- Experience within Australian Government or Defence environments is highly desirable.
- Eligibility to obtain and maintain an Australian Government Security Clearance.
