Summary: The Cost Accounting Specialist is responsible for supporting cost accounting activities related to inventory movement, inventory valuation, standard costing, and financial analysis. This position helps ensure accurate cost information is maintained for manufacturing operations, supports reporting and audit needs related to cost and inventory, and provides analytical support for business decisions. The role also works closely with internal departments to support physical inventory, cost control, and continuous improvement of cost accounting processes.
What You’ll Do:
- Analyze standard costs and identify cost variances.
- Establish labor and overhead rates on an annual basis.
- Establish and maintain standard costs for finished goods (Costed Bill of Materials).
- Support review and coordination of direct material purchase transactions as needed.
- Provide supporting documentation for internal/external auditor requests.
- Support cross-functional accounting activities related to cost, inventory, and reporting as needed.
- Develop and maintain Cost Accounting process.
- Lean company-wide bi-annual Physical Inventory for two plants, including educating management and workers to accomplish a 99% accuracy rate.
- Prepare month-end closing reports and financial audit related to cost and inventory.
- Record journal entries to reflect inventory movement from receipts to finished products.
- Allocate direct labor and overhead cost to automatic transmissions.
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of cost accounting principles, including standard costing, cost variance analysis, and inventory costing.
- General accounting knowledge with the ability to understand how cost accounting activity supports overall financial reporting.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to review data, identify trends, investigate variances, and support problem resolution.
- Knowledge of manufacturing cost structures, including labor, overhead, and inventory movement.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to review data, identify trends, investigate variances, and support problem resolution.
- Ability to communicate financial and operational information clearly and effectively to cross-functional teams.
- Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality.
Qualifications, Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, Economics or related fields required.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in Cost Accounting in a manufacturing environment is required.
- Experience with fixed asset accounting, tracking, and related processes.
- Experience preparing, analyzing, and interpreting analytic reports to support business decisions.
- Previous experience with an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system in a manufacturing environment is required. Experience using Microsoft Dynamics is preferred.
- Intermediate to Advanced skills in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook & Teams.
