Job overview:
The Communications Officer will support the development and implementation of NRC Afghanistan’s Advocacy and Communications Strategy in close coordination with all field teams and management. This position will coordinate and develop high quality communications products for traditional media, web and social media, and programmes communications. The Communications Officer will also build skills within the team to develop quality communications products in line with NRC guidelines and donor requirements.
Generic responsibilities
- Deliver high-quality, fresh, communication, advocacy and fundraising products based on the Country Advocacy Strategy, and in line with Country Programme Strategy.
- Ensure that NRC’s advocacy and communications activities promote the voice and wellbeing of people we work with through communications products such as photos, web stories, NRC Viva Engage internal communication posts, case studies, social media posts, videos etc.
- Support on media and public advocacy work including identifying relevant stories and providing key information to be used for press releases and talking points.
- Undertake regular travel to NRC programme locations to identify stories, gather content relating to NRC programmes, and support programme staff with communications-related activities.
- Ensure post-production of gathered content such as web stories, videos and photos is in line with NRC’s guidelines.
- Support all programmes teams with the development of visibility materials, ensuring these are developed in compliance with NRC and donor guidelines.
- Work closely with media and communications colleagues at regional and global levels to develop, coordinate and polish communications materials.
- Any other communications-related task as required or directed.
Specific responsibilities:
- With line manager and team develop a monthly action plan detailing outputs and support required.
- Visit NRC field sites to identify stories and collect communications materials for internal and external use.
- Produce high quality content such as web stories, videos, photo essays, social media posts etc.
- Upload quality photos and videos to the NRC Visuals multimedia library.
- Design creative products that portray the humanitarian situation and needs in a manner that is dignified and focuses on the capacity of people in Afghanistan, in line with NRC guidelines.
- Provide training, including informed consent training, and on-the-job support to colleagues in field sites to develop their skills in communications, including taking quality photos and developing case studies.
- Work efficiently with programmes teams to develop visibility materials and other communications products that comply with NRC and donor guidelines.
- Develop infographics or other visual materials as required.
Generic Professional Competencies:
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, Media Studies, Communications, Social Sciences, or a related field is desirable; alternatively, an undergraduate degree with a minimum of two years of experience working with humanitarian organizations, or equivalent experience in media and communications, will be considered.
- Demonstrated skills in producing communication products such as social media content, web stories, case studies, photos and videos.
- Knowledge and experience with photography and videography, including collecting material and video editing (experience of Adobe Premiere would be an advantage).
- Experience working in communications for a humanitarian organisation is desired.
- High level English, Dari, and Pashto proficiency (speaking, reading, writing).
- Analytic and computer skills, including MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
- Understanding of the international humanitarian system and related issues including protection, returnees and internal displacement relevant to the Afghanistan context.
- Strong coordination, organisational and team working skills, with proven ability to work independently and to deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to work with diverse communities including in leading key informant interviews and other formal and non-formal methods.
