Position Summary:
The College of Social Work and Criminal Justice at Florida Atlantic University is seeking an Academic Advisor I in Boca Raton, FL.
The immense faculty expertise and strong community partnerships within our two schools – the Phyllis & Harvey Sandler School of Social Work and the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice – produce graduates who are prepared to make a difference. Our alumni enter the fields of social work and criminal justice fully trained to analyze, implement and evaluate criminal justice and social welfare policies and practices; address discriminatory systems and processes; provide direct services to vulnerable populations; restore justice and promote equal access to care.
This position plays a vital role in that mission by providing comprehensive academic advising, degree planning, and guidance on university policies, procedures, and program requirements.
Summary of responsibilities:
Reinforce and support student degree progress, academic success, and retention, in alignment with the strategic priorities of the college and its ongoing commitment to student success.
Help create and sustain a positive environment in which all students have access to high-quality advising.
Assist all Social Work and Criminal Justice (SW-CJ) students through the academic process from initial contact to graduation.
Assist students with exploring and gathering information on University and College policies, procedures, and degree requirements.
Serve as an academic advisor in providing academic advising and program guidance to SW-CJ students.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge about the College’s programs and requirements.
Advise students about the courses and requirements for degree programs.
Inform students about possible consequences of academic decisions (e.g., adding, dropping, withdrawing, changing of major, repeated attempts).
Educate students about course planning and registration processes.
Make appropriate referrals to students perceived as at-risk and act as an advocate for student success.
Monitor student academic plans to provide timely, proactive outreach to ensure degree progression and timely graduation.
Direct students to the appropriate university office for assistance with concerns that do not fall within the purview of SW-CJ Advising Services.
Support Advising Services with student programming and special events.
Participate in student recruitment and orientation presentations.
Maintain college academic files for students in relevant college degree programs.
Recognize the importance of key performance indicators and work competently with available software and technology to facilitate timely and data-driven advising.
Work collaboratively with multiple units across the university.
Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
