The Department of Environmental Services (DES) is seeking Automotive Mechanics to join our team! The Auto Equipment Bureau provides maintenance and repair services to all County and Schools fleet vehicles, including heavy fire apparatus, buses, dump trucks, utility trucks, passenger vehicles, snow-related equipment, and other heavy and light equipment. The selected candidates will perform skilled mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic repair and maintenance on a variety of vehicle types, reporting to the Trades Manager/Leader I.
Specific duties include:
The ideal candidates will have experience performing diagnostic testing and corrective repairs on a diverse fleet including heavy equipment, fire apparatus, buses, and/or light vehicles in a municipal, government, or large-fleet environment.
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma/GED or equivalent; plus
Note: Candidates will be placed at the appropriate level based on qualifications, licensure, and experience. Current vacancies exist in the heavy section; One Auto Mechanic I in Preventive Maintenance Bus (PMB), night shift, and one Auto Mechanic II in Fire & Engineering Fleet, on day shift.

Licensure/Certification Timeframes: Applicants must possess or obtain within the specified timeframes of appointment:
VA State Safety Inspector License within the first twelve (12) months of employment (all positions)
Work Environment: Includes exposure to noise, odors, dust, grease, and dirt with extended periods of standing, walking, bending, crouching, and lifting light to very heavy objects and equipment. The worker must be able to exert up to 75 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Workers are required to wear common protective gear or safety equipment such as safety shoes, glasses, gloves, hearing protection, or hard hats.
Note: Once obtained, the CDL and VA State Safety Inspector License must be kept in good standing throughout the duration of employment.

Position is classified as essential. Employees must be available for seasonal overtime, callback, working on call, during weekends, holidays, and emergencies.
The official title and FY27 salary ranges for each level are as follows:
Automotive Mechanic I: $61,568.00 - $94,016.00 Annually
Automotive Mechanic II: $67,454.40 - $102,960.00 Annually
