- Seeking Snowflake Engineering SME
How will I help?
In this hands-on and high-profile function, you'll be a Snowflake Platform Engineering SME and help build and run one of Westpac’s core enterprise data platforms—ensuring it is secure, scalable, reliable and cost‑effective.
You’ll work at the heart of the Data Platforms Engineering team, partnering with data, governance, security and infrastructure teams to enable high‑quality data consumption at scale. This role is about real platform ownership: improving resilience, standardising environments, automating at scale, and supporting the modernisation of legacy platforms into Snowflake.
What will I do?
- Engineer and operate Snowflake environments (DEV / TEST / PROD) using automation, AI‑first and Infrastructure‑as‑Code principles
- Define and uplift platform standards for environment design, warehouse strategies, lifecycle management and metadata
- Build strong observability, monitoring and operational rhythms across the platform
- Enable modern Snowflake capabilities, including AI Cortex and Snowflake ML
- Embed secure‑by‑default access models using RBAC, least‑privilege and data protection controls
- Optimise platform performance, reliability and cost, supported by proactive monitoring and usage insights
- Develop automation for provisioning, policy management and CI/CD pipelines
- Support migration from legacy platforms (e.g. Teradata) and onboard new data products safely
- Produce clear documentation, runbooks and enablement pathways for platform users
What do I need?
Essential Ingredients for Success …
- Deep and advanced hands‑on experience engineering and operating Snowflake in enterprise environments
- Strong understanding of Snowflake architecture, security and performance patterns
- Proven experience implementing RBAC and secure access controls
- Strong SQL skills with a performance‑focused mindset

- Confidence working across engineering, security, governance and delivery teams
- Experience working in regulated or risk‑sensitive environments
- Exposure to public cloud platforms (Azure, AWS or GCP)
- Familiarity with modern data tooling (ADF, Airflow, dbt, Matillion or similar)
- Understanding of analytics and data consumption patterns
- Solid exposure to AI as it evolves within the role and the workplace
What makes me a great fit?
- You’re a hands‑on engineer who values automation, standardisation and reliability
- You’re risk‑aware and security‑focused, without losing sight of delivery
- You treat platforms as products and internal teams as customers
- You balance pragmatism with engineering excellence
- You communicate clearly and value strong documentation
