In this role, you transition from technical operation to operational command, overseeing a survey crew to ensure the high-precision collection of spatial data. You are the primary point of contact in the field, responsible for translating complex engineering plans into physical reality. The Party Chief ensures that all boundary, topographic, and construction staking projects are completed with absolute mathematical accuracy, on schedule, and in full compliance with safety protocols
Key Responsibilities
Field Leadership & Supervision: Lead and mentor a field crew, delegating tasks to Instrument Persons and, if necessary, Technicians while ensuring peak operational performance and site safety.
Advanced Data Management: Execute complex survey computations in the field. Oversight of the collection and downloading of data from Total Stations, Robotic instruments, and GPS/GNSS receivers.
Project Execution: Interpret complex construction plans, and maps for boundary determination and construction staking (curb, utility, and structural).
Quality Assurance: Direct the preparation of meticulous field notes, sketches, and digital data files. You are responsible for the final accuracy of all field-generated deliverables before they reach the office.
Equipment Stewardship: Oversee the calibration and preventative maintenance of high-value instrumentation and ensure the crew vehicle is fully stocked and operational.
Client & Stakeholder Liaison: Serve as the on-site representative for Boswell, coordinating directly with project managers, contractors, and property owners to resolve field discrepancies in real-time.
Qualifications & Skills
Technical Mastery: Expert proficiency in Leica, Trimble, or Topcon instrumentation and data collection software.
Mathematical Precision: Strong command of coordinate geometry (COGO), trigonometry, and survey calculations.
Plan Interpretation: Exceptional ability to read and interpret complex engineering blueprints, site plans, surveys and tax maps.
Leadership Experience: Minimum of 5+ years of progressive experience in land surveying, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or "Lead" capacity.
Regulatory Knowledge: Working knowledge of New Jersey state laws regarding boundary surveys and professional standards of practice.
Software Integration (Preferred): Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D or similar platforms to review digital design files.
Licensing (Preferred): Possession of an LSIT (Land Surveyor in Training) or aspirations toward a PLS (Professional Land Surveyor) license is highly regarded.
Physical & Environmental Requirements
Regularly required to walk, stand, and navigate challenging, unrefined terrain for extended shifts.
Frequent lifting and maneuvering of equipment and materials weighing 60 pounds or more.
