The Department of Sociology in the College of Arts and Sciences at American University invites applications for a full-time, tenured position beginning August 1, 2017. Depending on qualifications, the appointment will be made at the associate or full professor level. The appointee will also serve as Director of the Center on Health, Risk and Society, based in the sociology department.
Candidates should be committed to excellence in both teaching and scholarly research. We seek applications from candidates engaged in high-quality scholarship in the social dimensions of health, with additional expertise in other areas that complement the strengths of the department, including globalization, urban communities or urban development, and/ or social inequalities related to race, class, gender, ethnicity or sexuality. Candidates should be able to teach courses in health as well as in other areas of interest. Successful candidates also will have experience serving as Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator on externally funded research in the area(s) of specialization, with highest priority given to externally funded collaborative research. Candidates should have an active research program consistent with the mission of the Center on Health, Risk and Society (CHRS).
CHRS comprises an interdisciplinary community of scholars applying social science theories, concepts, and methods to the study of health. The Center provides a range of resources to foster the development and implementation of innovative collaborative research on the social, political, cultural, economic, historical, and legal dimensions of health conducted at all levels of analysis. Thematic areas reflected in the work of CHRS currently include: global health, global/transnational processes, health across the life course, organizations and networks, inequality and health disparities, and urban life and community change. As director of CHRS, the candidate will provide overall vision, and continue to promote activities consistent with maintaining an interdisciplinary community and supporting the development and implementation of externally funded research.
