Under direct supervision, the Groundskeeper performs manual labor duties in the maintenance of grounds and outdoor facilities, including stormwater facilities. This role performs ground maintenance activities including cultivating, planting gardens, watering, fertilizing, weeding, lawn, mowing, trimming and pruning shrubs and trees. This position performs activities in all types of weather conditions including snow removal. This position requires a broad range of skill sets including the ability to operate or learn to operate hand tools and multiple types of motorized landscape equipment. The selected candidate must be able to pass the registered pesticide applicator training and have a valid driver’s license.
Performs preventative maintenance activities such as cleaning roadside curbs, sidewalks etc. Preparing areas for daily campus activities. Performs storm water facility maintenance assistance. Removes dirt, trash and debris from assigned areas and transports same to appropriate disposal facility.

Utilizing gas powered or electric equipment, clean up and transport leaves, tree limbs etc. Address frequent service calls, and emergencies such a spill, animal issues. Patches asphalt, paver, or concrete areas. Perform painting, fence, and sign maintenance.
Operates hand and power equipment such as mowers, tillers, sweepers, snow blowers, edgers, shovels, and small vehicles. Performs routine assembly, cleaning and maintenance of equipment as needed.
Perform installation of annuals, perennials, native plants, shrubs, trees, following detailed plans and directions. Transport and install soils, mulches, compost, and other soil amendments. Responsible to clean up area when completed.
Measures, mixes, and applies fertilizer, and other chemicals following specific instructions under direct supervision.
Performs removal of snow and ice from assigned areas using hand and power snow removal equipment. Spreads salt, sand, and deicers to prevent slipping.
Essential position required for snow removal, events, and other campus emergencies.
Ability to read, write, and perform arithmetic calculations; to follow oral and written instructions; to operate and perform minor maintenance to assigned hand and power tools and equipment; to perform work in, on, around, under and over trees, shrubs, and buildings and facilities; to work at heights up to 35 feet; to perform physical workrequiring bending, stooping, reaching, carrying, and frequent heavy lifting; to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions; to wear and work in personal protective equipment.
Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience, and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education of experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
Valid Maryland Noncommercial Class C, or equivalent, driver’s license with no more than 5 points.
Preferred qualifications:
High School diploma.
Basic gardening knowledge, plant and weed identification.
Have the ability to obtain within one (1) year from the start MDE Responsible Personnel Training (formerly the Green Card).
$38,000 annually and full University benefits that includes annual leave, up to 17 holidays, personal and sick days; excellent health, life, and retirement plans; and tuition remission. Applicants with TU or USM service may receive salary credit. When applicable, a 2.5% increase may be added to the annual salary, pending successful completion of the initial six-month probationary period, for this position.
