Compensation Range & Essential Functions: 8530 Deputy Probation Officer (SFERS)
Both the San Francisco Adult Probation Department ("APD") and Juvenile Probation Department ("JPD") are seeking Deputy Probation Officers through this LATERAL recruitment. Successful candidates must have at least 2 years of active experience, a bachelor's degree, and successful completion of a California POST OR STC-certified P.C. 832 Arrest and Control course AND an STC-certified Probation Officer Core course.
IMPORTANT: Individuals who are not currently employed full-time as a Deputy Probation Officer but have a minimum of two years of full-time experience in a California County Probation Department should not have a separation date greater than six months from the date of application.
Each day, San Francisco Deputy Probation Officers (DPOs) have the opportunity to contribute to community safety by actively engaging with at-risk youth and adults. DPOs work in close cooperation with the County's criminal justice system and partner with Community Based Organizations to offer guidance and support to the population we serve. SFAPD dedicates endless energy toward enhancing public safety, seeking victim restoration and accountability, providing structured and evidence-based supervision, and pretrial services all on the behalf of the Superior Court of San Francisco.
The San Francisco Juvenile Probation Department serves the needs of youth and families who are brought to our attention with care and compassion; identifies and respond to the individual risks and needs presented by each youth, identifies and utilizes the least restrictive interventions and placements that do not compromise public safety; holds youth accountable for their actions while providing them with opportunities and assisting them to develop new skills and competencies; and contributes to the overall quality of life for the citizens of San Francisco within the sound framework of public safety as outlined in the Welfare & Institutions Code.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (please note that the following eligibility requirements will be verified during Background Investigation)
VERIFICATION
Copies of CA STC-certified Probation Core and P.C. 832 training completion certificates must be submitted with your application.
Applicants may be required to submit verification of qualifying education and experience at any point during the recruitment and selection process. Applicant will be required work a non-traditional work schedule i.e. evening, weekends, etc.
Note: Falsifying one’s education, training, or work experience or attempted deception on the application may result in disqualification for this and future job opportunities with the City and County of San Francisco.
All work experience, education, training and other information substantiating how you meet the minimum qualifications must be included on your application by the deadline. Information submitted after the filing deadline will not be considered in determining whether you meet the minimum qualifications.

SELECTION PROCEDURES:
Oral Interview (60%)
The Oral Interview will assess community involvement, interest and motivation, interpersonal skills, problem solving, and oral communication skills. The Oral Interview score will be used to place candidates on the eligible list.
Candidates will be notified via email of their pass/fail status on the Oral Interview. Those that do not pass may request another opportunity to re-take the test no sooner than one (1) month from their previous attempt.
Supplemental Questionnaire (40%)
The questionnaire will be reviewed and scored to added to the overall score.
The Supplemental Questionnaire will provide an applicant an opportunity to demonstrate the unique qualities that the will bring to SFAPD or SFJPD should they be hired.
Eligible List / Certification Rule
Candidates that pass the Oral Interview and Supplemental Questionnaire will have their names added to the eligible list. Candidate names will remain on the list for a maximum period of 12 months. The Adult Probation Department has the option to hire any candidate on the eligible list (“Rule of List”). Therefore, placement on this list neither guarantees nor implies that you will be offered employment. The Adult Probation Department will administer the remaining processes outlined above to determine who shall advance further in the hiring process and be considered for appointment.
All selected candidates are required to successfully complete and pass a POST-guided Background Investigation, conducted in accordance with standards set by the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training, as a condition of employment.
Candidates that are not selected after the background process will be withdrawn from the eligible list and may re-apply two years from the date of their notification.

In accordance with Civil Service Commission Rule 211.16.1, candidates may appeal the administration of the examination components. All appeals must be filed in writing with the Department of Human Resources within five (5) calendar days of the administration of the examination component giving rise to the appeal. A day that the Department of Human Resources is closed shall not be counted as the fifth (5th) calendar day. Appeals shall be limited as defined in Rule 211.16.1
