About the role
Sitting at the heart of Convatec’s commitment to a safe and sustainable workplace, this 3-month internship offers the successful candidate the opportunity to play a central role in elevating our Chemical Management systems.
Convatec is seeking an EHS & Sustainability intern (full-time) to join our plant operations team based in Haina, Dominican Republic. The medical device manufacturing processes for our ostomy and advanced wound care products utilize various chemicals, adhesives, and solvents. This role will focus on driving continuous improvement in how we procure, store, use, and dispose of these materials.
In particular, the role will lead a targeted 3-month project: performing a comprehensive gap assessment of our current chemical management practices, structuring a strategic project plan (Gantt chart), and executing critical, short-term corrective actions. You will work directly with manufacturing operators, the engineering team, and EHS leadership to foster a proactive safety culture and ensure alignment with ISO 14001, ISO 45001, OSHA standards, and local Dominican Republic regulations (Reglamento 522-06).
Length of assignment: 3 months
Your main tasks:
Conduct a thorough gap assessment of the site's current chemical inventory, storage, and handling practices against the Global Chemical Management Policy (BD‑0067) and local procedure DR‑SOP‑0164.
Develop and structure a detailed project plan (Gantt chart) outlining short‑, medium‑, and long‑term chemical management improvement initiatives.
Execute achievable short‑term actions within the internship period, including updating Safety Data Sheets (SDS), ensuring full compliance with GHS labeling on secondary containers, and identifying chemical substitution opportunities.
Engage with floor staff and line leaders to promote a strong safety culture by conducting toolbox talks or brief training sessions on chemical hazard awareness and proper PPE usage (BD‑0070).
Evaluate current waste streams and collaborate with the team on initiatives to reduce hazardous waste generation in alignment with ISO 14001 environmental objectives and resource‑conservation goals.
Evaluate and manage data to compile clear reports, charts, and gap‑assessment summaries for senior plant leadership and the Global EHS team.
About you
Strong analytical and project‑management abilities, including building and tracking project priorities such as Gantt‑based timelines.
High attention to detail when reviewing regulatory requirements, Safety Data Sheets, and compliance matrices to ensure accuracy and alignment with standards.
Clear and concise written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with both floor operators and senior leadership; bilingual capability in Spanish and English is highly preferred.
Proficiency with core MS Office applications, including Excel, Project, and PowerPoint.
Genuine interest in environmental sustainability, occupational health, and fostering a positive, proactive safety culture.
Gain experience that sets you apart, build skills in demand across industries, and make a real impact through sustainability initiatives.
