About You:
We are seeking a dedicated and skilled CNC Machinist/Model Maker to join our team. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in manual and CNC machining techniques, combined with in-depth knowledge of prototyping high-precision, tight-tolerance components in plastic and metal. This individual will collaborate closely with engineers, scientists and manufacturing personnel to design and fabricate prototype parts, fixtures and assemblies to support development efforts.
What you will do:
- Utilize your deep understanding of machining processes and materials to fabricate microfluidic prototype components from plastic and soft metals.
- Set up and program CNC vertical multi-axis machining centers.
- Use advanced CAD/CAM software (Fusion 360, SolidWorks) to design and manufacture components to support the development teams.
- Operate manual milling machines, automatic and manual surface grinders, and other machining fixtures.
- Perform routine preventative maintenance to ensure equipment performs at highest level of quality
- Polish and finish prototype components using specialized equipment to ensure proper fit and finish.
- Conduct repair work on discs, fixtures, molds and components, including welding, inserting, and revision changes.
- Support quick turn prototyping of various microfluidic designs as well as instrument and mold components to support the engineering teams.
- Develop programs and fixturing approaches to enable machining of multiple prototype components as overnight or over the weekend walk away machining.
- Design and build gauges, jigs, and fixtures as needed to check part accuracy.
- Provide mold and tooling expertise during design reviews and product development discussions.
- Document all work performed and adhere to safety protocols and best shop practices.
- Work effectively with senior and junior mold-makers on various projects.
- Provide input on continuous improvement to the milling process enhancing quality, robustness and throughput.
What You’ll Need:
- Minimum 5 years of experience in machining and Manufacturing of high precision parts from plastic and metal.
- Proven manual machining skills (5 years preferred), machinist or tool & die certification (preferred) at tolerances tighter than ±0.0005”.
- Proficiency in CAD/CAM software, with a preference for Fusion 360, SolidWorks and Autocad.
- Ability to set up and program CNC machines, including multi-axis machining centers.
- Strong understanding of algebra and trigonometry, and the high proficiency in reading and interpreting engineering drawings, GD&T, and 3D models..
- Experience working with ASME Y14.5 GD&T requirements and interpreting critical dimensions from engineering drawings.
- Expertise in tool-making design considerations, including draft angles, gating, cooling systems, and undercut relief.
- Strong understanding of cutting tools, tool life optimization, and feeds/speeds for non-metallic materials.
Bonus Points for:
- Experience with automated and semi-automated equipment.
- Working knowledge of ASME Y14.5 GD&T and advanced inspection instruments.
- An eye for efficiency in material removal techniques, including speeds, feeds, cut depths, and tooling.
