An opportunity exists in Stantec’s Ottawa, ON office for a Senior Sustainability Consultant with a mechanical engineering background to join our multidisciplinary team. In this role, you will apply your mechanical engineering expertise to support sustainability and energy consulting services, supporting projects through analysis, strategy development, and technical advisory.
Responsibilities:
As the successful candidate, your responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
- Providing senior technical advisory services on building energy systems, leveraging a mechanical engineering background to support sustainability and performance‑driven decision making.
- Leading or supporting energy, electrification, and decarbonization studies for new and existing buildings, campuses, and portfolios.
- Evaluating mechanical system options from a performance, constructability, and lifecycle perspective, including heat pumps, central plants, district energy, and hybrid systems.
- Preparing technical reports, feasibility studies, and advisory memos that translate complex engineering concepts into clear recommendations for clients and project teams.
- Supporting early‑stage concept development in collaboration with mechanical, electrical, architectural, and planning teams.
- Reviewing mechanical designs and system strategies to ensure alignment with project energy and performance objectives (without serving as the discipline designer or EOR).
- Contributing to energy master planning, retrofit planning, and system transition studies for complex facilities.
- Collaborating closely with project managers and discipline leads to integrating sustainability and energy analysis into project delivery.
- Mentoring junior sustainability and engineering staff, providing guidance on system analysis, technical writing, and study methodologies.
- Supporting proposals, client discussions, and pursuit efforts related to sustainability and building performance services.
Qualifications:
- 7+ years of experience in consulting engineering and/or sustainability consulting, with demonstrated experience applying mechanical engineering knowledge in an advisory capacity.
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering (P.Eng eligible or registered) or equivalent experience.
- Strong understanding of building mechanical systems, including HVAC, hydronics, heat pumps, and central energy systems.
- Experience participating in or leading energy studies, system evaluations, retrofit analyses, or district energy projects.
- Familiarity with the National and Ontario Building Codes and ASHRAE standards.
- Experience with energy modeling tools (e.g., IES) is considered an asset.
- Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and embodied carbon analysis experience is considered an asset.
- Strong technical writing skills with the ability to produce clear, client‑ready reports and recommendations.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills; comfortable working across disciplines and with senior client stakeholders.
- Eligible to obtain PSPC Secret Clearance (existing clearance considered an asset).
- Organized, self‑motivated, and able to manage multiple assignments in a consulting environment.
- Ability to travel within Canada as required; valid driver’s license required.
- French language skills are considered an asset.
