The School of Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) is hiring two Student Assistants (1 undergraduate and 1 graduate student) to serve as support to the front office reception desk. Student Assistants will provide general front office reception support with a variety of clerical activities and related tasks. This position will be responsible for handling front office reception and administrative duties, including greeting guests, answering phones, and making referrals. This position will serve as a resource for undergraduate and graduate students, staff and faculty in the School of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
Note: The Graduate Student Assistant will be assigned additional projects with the Office of Graduate Studies.
Responsibilities include:
Monitoring uwbstem/stemgrad email boxes and responding to varied inquiries
Answering front desk phone for School of STEM and Office of Graduate Studies, referring callers to appropriate resources
Answering general questions regarding the School of STEM Graduate Program offerings and/or directing to appropriate resource
Checking copier daily. Refilling and reordering paper and toner through mailroom. Reporting malfunctions to IT.
Creating work orders if broken items are reported to uwbstem (lights, water, etc.)
Checking supplies in supply room and work with STEMfisc to order and restock
Managing calculator check-outs
Reserving meeting rooms for faculty
Scanning and filing Lab Safety Forms
Assisting Department Coordinators and Dean's Assistant with events and faculty interviews (food delivery, video recordings, etc.)
Serving as drop-off point for faculty and students (graders, equipment, paper docs., etc.)
Welcoming and directing students to Department Coordinators for I-9s
Maintaining confidentiality in working with student records (FERPA training required).
Helping with mail deliveries
Assisting on special projects as assigned
Performing additional duties as assigned
Time Commitment and Salary
Monday-Friday, 4-5 hours per day
One-year commitment (start date estimated May 18, 2026)
Pay rates:
Graduate student rate—$24.15/hour
Note: If you are or will be working elsewhere on campus, be aware that students are limited to working a combined total of 19.5 hours per week, or 19 hours if work study, in all campus jobs when you are enrolled in classes.
All new student employees must also complete UW's online Title IX course about preventing and responding to sex-and gender-based violence and harassment.
