Why intern with Canada’s Drug Agency? As an Intern, you will gain a unique understanding of how drugs and devices move from federal regulatory approval to public listing and availability in provincial and territorial health systems. You will gain a deeper understanding of our contribution to that process, and the importance of providing evidence and advice to jurisdictional leaders to help inform decisions. During your internship, you will have an opportunity to apply your knowledge and expertise to tangible projects to contribute to advancing access to genomic and biomarker testing required to support drug eligibility and precision treatment pathways, as well as to apply your training and turn your knowledge into action and impact. You will work with a variety of external collaborators and key interested parties. You will also work with a highly skilled team of professionals with expertise in the areas of clinical and health economics research, information services and librarianship, policy analysis, and ethics, to name a few.
What are the opportunities offered? We are currently looking for a talented student to bring their dedication, passion, and innovative ideas to a meaningful and stimulating 4-month internship position with the Health Technologies and Systems team.
The Health Technologies and Systems team is under the Evidence, Products, and Services business unit and works on health system issues and medical technologies broadly, including companion diagnostics, precision medicine, and medical imaging.
The Intern will have the opportunity to contribute to the ongoing work in the precision medicine landscape and hone their research, data analysis, data visualization, and report writing skills. They will build strong complementary knowledge in assessing health technologies and understanding the landscape of molecular and genomic testing. They will also gain complementary skills in organizational decision support, including preparing and translating data into meaningful insights for decision-makers.
The tasks may vary according to the successful applicant’s interest area and will be discussed and coordinated during the offer process. Some essential functions may include, but are not limited to: • performing preliminary screening and extracting data to be included in reports • conducting research, data analysis, and administrative and operational tasks • analyzing information and data, and writing accessible summaries to support various projects • distilling complex information into clear, easy-to-understand communications, including visual material • assisting with the Testing Procedure Assessment program and/or reviews of precision medicine and health system issues • preparing and presenting research findings to internal teams • collaborating with various internal and external partners and collaborators • participating as a team member in team meetings, all-staff monthly meetings, and other events • interacting with other teams as required to support current priorities and initiatives in alignment with corporate objectives.
Is this the right role for you? The Intern will likely have: • a graduate program in a health-related discipline (e.g., epidemiology, health technology assessment, pharmacy, biotechnology, health policy, regulatory affairs) in progress • a demonstrated strength and experience in data analysis and report writing and interest in producing business insights • related experience writing or preparing reports in a health research environment • strong Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint skills for data visualization and presentations • familiarity with Microsoft Power BI or other interactive platforms for data visualization • strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks with competing deadlines • a willingness to take initiative and demonstrate innovative thinking • the ability to work effectively both autonomously and as part of a team • a desire to refine their skills and develop new ones • a keen interest in growing and developing their professional network • the ability to act with integrity, respect, professionalism, and collaboration • a desire to do meaningful work that will have a positive impact on the lives of people living in Canada.
