Position Overview
The Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) seeks a highly organized and mission-driven Program Coordinator to support the Outdoor Journey Fund (OJF) — a program designed to increase access to outdoor experiences for underrepresented and underserved groups. This role manages group logistics from application to post-trip evaluation and oversees gear library operations across AMC’s New York region, including gear lending, inventory, and travel to support gear access for program participants.
What You’ll Be Doing at AMC
Communication & Engagement 40%
Review incoming OJF applications for completeness and eligibility
Implement pre-trip communications to prepare groups for their experience
Administer post-trip surveys and collect feedback, testimonials, and photos from participants and group leaders
Maintain consistent and responsive communication with all stakeholders
Assist with the development and deployment of OJF community stewardship plans aimed at maintaining and deepening relationships with program participants.
Trip Support and Logistics 30%
Support for OJF groups with trip planning, lodging arrangements, meals, transportation, gear, and activity scheduling
Coordinate logistics with AMC destinations to ensure smooth group experiences
Provide curriculum, games, activities, scheduling advice and best practices along Ensure thorough tracking of groups and contacts in AMC’s CRM, Salesforce
Track participant demographics, trip details, and engagement metrics
Generate regular reports summarizing program impact and trends
with mentorship to the OJF leaders
Gear Library Operations 30%
Collaborate with AMC’s Boston-based Gear Coordinator to support gear library operations across AMC’s New York region, including gear lending, inventory management, and maintenance
Travel regularly to AMC gear library sites throughout the NY region to facilitate gear checkouts, returns, and ensure proper gear storage and upkeep
Serve as a point of contact for gear borrowers, providing guidance on equipment use, safety, and AMC policies
Collaborate with regional staff to align gear library logistics with programming needs, ensuring timely access to equipment for outdoor events and activities.
Track gear usage trends and assist in planning gear purchases or replacements based on demand and condition.

Ability to create emotionally safe, inclusive learning environments and foster positive group culture.
Experience supporting or mentoring others in outdoor settings.
Wilderness First Aid & CPR certification, or ability to obtain certification before starting employment.
Comfort with backcountry travel, including hiking 6–8 miles per day on uneven terrain while carrying up to 40 pounds, in a variety of weather conditions.
Ability to travel to gear libraries across AMC’s NY/ NJ locations.
Ability to perform gear-related tasks, including mending equipment and lifting/rotating boxes.
Willingness to work long hours in mentally and physically demanding environments.
Preferred Qualifications
Strong knowledge of natural history in the regions where AMC operates.
Bachelor’s degree in natural sciences, experiential education, outdoor leadership, or a related field — or equivalent experience.
Prior experience creating youth-focused learning environments and building rapport with young participants.
Experience leading or training staff in outdoor skills or programs.

The initial salary represents our starting point, and our compensation philosophy is designed to reward and recognize the contributions of our employees as they grow within the organization. External candidates typically begin their journey with us at the starting point of the salary range. The final compensation offer will be based on factors such as experience, education, competencies, and geographic differential relevant to the position, and will be discussed during the interview process.
