PhD Position in Thin Films, Nanostructures, and Functional Materials – Nanophysics Group, Reykjavík University

Reykjavík University invites applications for a PhD position within the Nanophysics Group.
The project focuses broadly on thin‑film deposition, nanostructure fabrication, semiconductor oxide materials, device assembly, electrical measurements, and related materials–device research.

Main Responsibilities

• Conduct experimental research on thin films and nanostructured materials.
• Develop and optimize physical vapour deposition (PVD) processes.
• Operate laboratory equipment including XRD, SEM, Raman, AFM and cryochambers.
• Analyze materials using structural, morphological, and electrical characterization techniques.
• Collaborate with team members, contribute to publications, and participate in dissemination activities.
• Engage in the broader research activities of the Nanophysics Group.

Required Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Materials Science, Physics, Nanotechnology, Engineering, or a related field.
• Demonstrated experience with PVD deposition.
• Working knowledge of XRD and SEM.
• Experience using electrical tools, basic electronics, and device assembly.
• Good understanding of thin films, nanostructures and semiconductors.
• Ability to work independently and in collaborative environments.
• Strong motivation for interdisciplinary research spanning materials science, plasma processes, and device engineering.
• Excellent English communication skills (spoken and written).

Preferred Qualifications

• Cleanroom experience.
• Experience with LabVIEW and/or Python programming.

About the Nanophysics Group

The PhD position is embedded within Reykjavík University’s Nanophysics Group, which conducts both experimental and theoretical research on nanoscale and microscale systems. The group specializes in the fabrication and characterization of nanostructures, including silicon nanowires, thin films, and nanoparticles. On the theoretical side, the group performs advanced simulations of vacuum electronic devices, electron transport, semiconductor heterostructures, and core‑shell nanowires. Ongoing research covers vacuum diodes, nanowire‑based devices, semiconductor oxides, and multiphysics simulations, providing strong synergy with the project. The group offers an interdisciplinary environment combining materials science, plasma processes, and device engineering.
