Overall Job Responsibility: The Communications Coordinator (CC) works as part of a multi-disciplinary team to provide leadership and expertise in communications, marketing, and branding. The CC will support the implementation of the Ontario Public Health Standards (OPHS) and Ontario Public Health Organizational Standards (OPHOS) through the planning and delivery of integrated marketing and communication products for the organization. The CC will use communication theories and evidence-informed practices to develop, plan, and execute communication strategies and tactics for Health Unit programs, services, and activities across various communication channels throughout the project lifecycle.
The CC will sustain community partnerships with stakeholders and also liaise with internal and external partners, agencies, and organizations. This position supports the ongoing operation of the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit and its visibility to the community. Core competencies include project management, presentation skills, customer service, self-management, teamwork, flexibility, and accountability.
Key areas of Responsibility: All competencies apply to the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of community- based activities and projects supporting the requirements of the OPHS. This list of duties is not all-inclusive and may be modified as public health programs change and as health unit need requires: • Create regular communication and marketing plans and corresponding reports and analyses (e.g., weekly, monthly, yearly). • Consult with internal and external partners to support marketing and communication needs of the organization. • Draft corporate communication items, including but not limited to media statements, news releases, and media advisories. • Generate images and content for use across digital platforms and various print mediums. • Support the production of short-form videos including editing and post-production content. • Support the planning and implementation of multi-faceted communication plans with department staff, including brainstorming creative approaches, generating content, documenting plans, working with budgets, and compiling post-campaign reports with applicable data. • Work with external vendors to quote advertisements and various other items (e.g., signage). Triage media requests and work with members of the staff to coordinate interviews with members of the media.
Position Qualifications: Education, training, & experience • A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university in Communication Studies, Marketing, Public Relations or a related field. • Over 1 year of previous work experience in corporate communications, marketing, digital marketing, advertising, social media, or media relations. • Proven expertise in planning, developing, and implementing integrated marketing and communications plans across multiple media and through the project lifecycle, including but not limited to: Meta platform and other social media platforms for paid advertisement, digital advertisements such as Google, and working with external vendors to generate and receive quotes and process necessary paperwork for payment purposes. • Experience with the planning, production, and implementation of communication products, including but not limited to: creating weekly, monthly, and annual plans, news releases, media packages, reports, brochures, presentations, social media posts, website and intranet articles, emails, newsletters, digital signage, and advertising plans for internal and external audiences in collaboration with project staff. • Experience with maintaining visual identity and branding standards of corporate and program resources across multiple owned, earned, and paid media. • Experience with social media engagement for an organization. This includes the monitoring, planning, and coordination of content, the promotions of the social media accounts through advertising, and tracking and responding to questions from followers. • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite including InDesign, Microsoft Office, email marketing platforms like Mailchimp, social media management platforms like Hootsuite, and posting content to Content Management Systems like Drupal. • Education and experience in graphic design is an asset (e.g., generating social media posts and other content with Adobe Stock Images, generating and editing fact sheets, posters, and other branded items as required). • Experience with filming and editing short-form video content (e.g., instructional / educational videos, social media reels) with tools such as Canva, Premiere, and After Effects. • Experience with monitoring and tracking communication effectiveness using Google Analytics, Hootsuite, or other customized tools and products and making recommendations to improve performance. • Experience with proofreading materials for grammar, spelling, and readability standards. • Experience with accessibility design standards. • Training and consultation experience.
Other Requirements • Current knowledge of public health programs in Ontario. • Excellent organizational and project management skills with the ability to meet competing priorities through independent and collaborative work. • Highly developed interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. • High personal motivation, self-management, and detail-orientation. • Capacity to learn quickly and in a self-directed fashion. • Ability to work flexible hours (i.e., occasional evenings and weekends) when necessary. • Satisfactory police clearance. • A valid Ontario Driver’s Licence, access to a reliable motor vehicle during working hours, and 1 million dollars in liability insurance. • Ability to meet physical demands of position • TB skin test • WECHU immunization policy must be adhered to
This position includes the option of hybrid work, whereby employees may be able to work remotely or from the office, based on departmental needs, job duties and personal work preferences. The successful candidate must reside within the province of Ontario and must be available to attend the office upon request.
