The New Zealand Law Society | Te Kāhui Ture o Aotearoa Law Society regulates all lawyers practicing in New Zealand and is the membership organisation for practising lawyers. With 13 branch offices throughout the country, the Law Society is the Kaitiaki (guardian) of the practise of law in Aotearoa New Zealand and the consumers of legal services.

About the role

Lawyers Standards Committees in the Lawyers Complaints Service consider conduct complaints and reports about lawyers and law firm employees and direct the associated investigation and independent decision making for appropriate disciplinary outcomes.

The Early Resolution Service Standards Committees consider cases with a national coverage. We are seeking lawyer members with experience in Family law, Property law and Civil litigation. Experience in regulatory compliance would be desirable.

Applications are welcomed from lawyers practising in any regions of New Zealand. This is a voluntary role although expenses will be reimbursed.

Applicants must have practised as a lawyer for a period or periods aggregating at least five years. Applicants must also be of good character and possess the skill, experience and judgement needed to deal with complaints and make appropriate decisions.

Standards Committee members work collaboratively and are supported by dedicated staff in the Lawyers Complaints Service. Meetings are held via zoom. There is reading and some preparation before each monthly meeting.
