This is an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to deepen their scholarly impact and build a distinctive research profile in green iron and steel, with a strong emphasis on energy and green finance in the context of Australia–China cooperation. Working within a highly collaborative, internationally engaged research environment, you will contribute to policy-relevant research that supports the global transition to low-carbon industrial systems and strengthens UQ’s reputation for purposeful, globally connected research.
Key responsibilities will include:
Research
Lead and contribute to policy-relevant research on green iron and steel investment, finance and policy, including green hydrogen and renewable energy systems, with a focus on Australia, China and global markets.
Analyse trade, investment and policy data to identify trends, drivers and scenarios for green metals collaboration.
Produce high-quality academic publications and policy-oriented outputs, including briefs and reports, and contribute to competitive research funding applications.
Translate research findings into practical outcomes and support engagement activities such as policy dialogues, webinars and stakeholder forums with industry, finance and government partners.
Supervision and Researcher Development
Contribute to the supervision and mentoring of Honours and Higher Degree by Research students, providing guidance, feedback and professional development support.
Support the development and coordination of research support staff in line with University policies and values.
Citizenship and Service
Demonstrate UQ-aligned citizenship behaviours through collaboration, collegiality and participation in priority activities.
Support internal academic and administrative functions, including committee work and the strengthening of external partnerships with industry, government and the wider community.

You will bring a strong foundation in applied, policy-relevant research and a genuine commitment to contributing to impactful, collaborative scholarship.
You will also demonstrate:
Completion or near completion of a PhD in Economics, Finance, Political Economy or a closely related discipline.
Demonstrated research experience in energy-related investment, finance or trade, with an emerging track record of academic and policy-focused publications.
Advanced skills in quantitative and qualitative data analysis, including the collection, cleaning and interpretation of complex trade, investment or policy datasets.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce clear, high-quality academic outputs and accessible policy briefs.
In-depth knowledge of the green energy and decarbonisation landscape, particularly in Australian and Chinese contexts.
Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities and collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary research teams.
Proficiency in written and spoken English, with Chinese language capability highly regarded.
