JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB Health), Galveston, Texas, seeks a board-certified or board-eligible Interventional Cardiologist to join its growing academic program at the title of Assistant or Associate Professor. The position is available in the coming 6-12 months.
The successful candidate will participate in an academic rapidly expanding practice that provides both inpatient and outpatient care, with expertise in coronary interventions and either endovascular or structural heart interventions. The practice is supported by the excellent infrastructure of UTMB Health, including a robust multidisciplinary team and advanced diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities. This position offers opportunities to teach and mentor trainees (including the 3 fellows in our accredited interventional cardiology fellowship), conduct research, and contribute to quality and safety initiatives while caring for a diverse patient population.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Clinical Care
- Provide comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care for patients with cardiovascular disease, with a focus on coronary, endovascular, and structural heart interventions.
- Perform diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterization procedures, including percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI), intravascular imaging, physiologic assessment, and structural interventions as credentialed.
- Participate in the interventional cardiology on-call rotation, including STEMI activations, emergent procedures, and complex coronary interventions.
- Bring added expertise in vascular medicine and peripheral interventions, advanced heart failure, and the use of mechanical circulatory support devices; experience with pulmonary embolism response teams (PERT) is highly valued.
- Oversee pre- and post-procedure care, including risk assessment, patient counseling, and longitudinal follow-up in clinic.
- Collaborate closely with cardiac surgery, advanced heart failure, electrophysiology, vascular medicine, and critical care teams to optimize patient outcomes.
- Provide same-day access when clinically indicated and ensure timely responsiveness to referring provider inquiries.
- Participate in outreach activities and clinics to expand access to advanced cardiovascular care.
Academic & Teaching Responsibilities
- Teach and mentor general and interventional cardiology fellows during outpatient clinics.
- Participate in didactic teaching sessions, case conferences, and journal clubs.
- Contribute to curriculum development for cardiovascular education.
- Supervise trainee documentation and ensure adherence to institutional standards.
Research & Scholarly Activity
- Participate in clinical research projects, including patient recruitment for trials.
- Publish scholarly articles, abstracts, or presentations in the field of cardiology.
- Support quality improvement and AI-based projects in the section of interventional cardiology.
Administrative Duties
- Document patient encounters promptly and accurately in the electronic medical record (EMR).
- Attend & engage in departmental and Institute meetings.
- Collaborate with clinic management to optimize patient flow and access.
- Participate in institutional committees as assigned.
- Contribute to development of clinical protocols, pathways, and best practices.
Quality, Safety, & Compliance
- Monitor clinical outcomes and participate in performance improvement initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with institutional, state, and federal healthcare regulations.
- Maintain appropriate credentialing, licensure, and continuing medical education (CME) requirements.
- Participate in peer review and morbidity/mortality conferences.
Professional Development & Community Engagement
- Attend & participate in national and regional cardiology conferences.
- Engage in outreach to referring providers and community organizations.
- Represent the institution in professional societies and advocacy efforts.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- MD degree or equivalent, Board certified or eligible in ABIM Cardiovascular Diseases with subspecialty certification (or eligibility) in Interventional Cardiology.
- Must have completed an ACGME-accredited interventional cardiology fellowship. Must possess or be eligible for full medical license in the State of Texas.
SALARY:
Commensurate with experience.
