

The Institute for Clinical and Translational Science (ICTS) at the University of Iowa supports clinical and translational research across the institution and partner communities. This position provides application development and support for research data systems, with a primary focus on REDCap and electronic data capture platforms.
This role partners with investigators, research staff, and interdisciplinary teams to design, develop, and maintain secure, compliant data collection systems for human subjects and other research. The position serves as a subject matter expert in research data systems, including database design, data integrity, regulatory compliance, and best practices for data collection and management.
The individual will consult with stakeholders to translate research protocols into technical solutions, develop scalable and compliant applications, and provide training and support to ensure high-quality, reproducible research outcomes.
Duties to include but not limited to:
· Consult with investigators and research teams to define functional and technical requirements for data collection systems.
· Translate study protocols and research workflows into structured database designs and application specifications.
· Configure and implement REDCap applications including surveys, forms, and data collection instruments.
· Develop application logic including branching logic, validation rules, calculated fields, and automated workflows.
· Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to REDCap databases and research data workflows.
· Review and analyze defects in application configuration and implement corrective actions.
· Support implementation of research data system projects.
· Manage project scope, timelines, deliverables, and stakeholder communication for assigned initiatives.
· Analyze research operations and data collection processes to identify system requirements.
· Evaluate system performance and user needs to recommend enhancements and improvements.
· Provide subject matter expertise in REDCap and research data management best practices.
· Mentor users and team members in database design, application usage, and data integrity principles.
· Develop and deliver training sessions on REDCap, database design, and data management best practices.
· Provide one-on-one consultation and user support for research teams.

· Typically, 2 to 5 years of experience in application development, research data management, or database design.
· Demonstrated experience with REDCap or similar electronic data capture systems.
· Experience translating user or research requirements into technical solutions.
· Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and resolve application and data workflow issues.
· Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate technical concepts to a variety of audiences.
· Experience working in cross-functional teams supporting research, healthcare, or academic environments.
Desirable Qualifications
· Experience supporting clinical or translational research in an academic or healthcare setting.
· Knowledge of HIPAA, FERPA, Good Clinical Practice (GCP), and human subjects research regulations.
· Experience designing databases and surveys for research data collection.
· Familiarity with SQL, R, SAS, or other data analysis tools.
· Experience developing and delivering technical training or user support programs.
· Familiarity with data security, data validation, and data quality best practices.
· Experience with multi-site research data coordination or CTSA-funded environments.
· Experience with Project Management fundamentals.
· Familiarity with medical coding and medical terminology.
