The City and County of Denver offers a competitive salary commensurate with education and experience. The salary range for this position is $21.00 per hour. We also offer generous benefits for full-time employees which include but are not limited to:

This is a limited position with an end date of one year from date of hire.
The City and County of Denver supports a hybrid workplace model. Employees are expected to work on-site at their designated job location at least three (3) days per week, with off-site work permitted as needed. Employees must perform all off-site work within the state of Colorado.
Positions within the Office of the Medical Examiner and the Department of Animal Protection do not qualify for remote or hybrid work arrangements and are expected to work in person on a full-time basis.
Denver's Department of Public Health and Environment (DDPHE) is dedicated to advancing Denver's environmental and public health goals. DDPHE works collaboratively with city, state and community partners to conduct education, community engagement, and enforcement to promote healthy people, healthy pets, and a sustainable environment. DDPHE oversees a number of services related to public health and the environment and is comprised of seven divisions: Division of Shared Services and Business Operations; Community & Behavioral Health; Public Health Investigations; Denver Animal Protection; the Office of Medical Examiner; Emergency Management and Medical Operations; and Environmental Quality. DDPHE is building a more representative workforce that reflects the diversity of Denver communities. We have two Public Health AmeriCorps / Community Health Worker Apprentice positions available for those interested in exploring a career in public and/or environmental health. Through supportive on-the-job learning and related classroom instruction using in-person and virtual formats, the successful candidates will gain the skills and knowledge needed to advance into a public health career. Certain requirements are required to be completed within a 1-year on-the-job training period.
Specifically, in this role, you will:
Conduct community outreach to individuals, communities, service providers, and groups.
Assist individuals and communities in navigating health and social service systems.
Implements individual and community assessments.
Provide culturally and linguistically appropriate health education and information.
Provide coaching and social support.
Build professional relationships and networks with service providers across systems to understand client services and resources.
Keep routine records, write reports, and completes forms.
Comply with standard safety rules and procedures. Learns the industry standards, regulatory standards, operational processes, and other guiding professional practices.
Along with all department staff, this position will actively participate on an emergency preparedness and response team to support DDPHE’s responsibilities outlined in the City’s Emergency Operations Plan. This may require being ‘on-call’ from time to time to help respond to emergencies. Additional training commensurate with assigned duties will be provided.

These positions will be assigned to one of two divisions within DDPHE. See information below about each division.
Denver Animal Protection (DAP):
This position will serve as the Community Engagement Assistant and will support resource, referral, and education activities in the Shelter’s community engagement program. Duties will include scheduling Shelter veterinary clinic clients, arranging transport to/from services, management of pet supply inventory and distribution, offering humane education to local K-12 schools and community-based organizations and attending community events. This person will gain knowledge about community resources and will be able to refer clients to services available for animals and humans. This position will work closely with teams in the Shelter and DDPHE, to build trust among community residents.
The ideal candidate will be passionate about the well-being of animals, their human guardians and be comfortable handling animals. This position is not eligible for remote work and may require periodic evening or weekend hours to support community events. Shift hours would be scheduled in coordination with community engagement team.
Emergency Management & Medical Operations (EMMO):
This position will support the Emergency Preparedness and Response (EPR) program and Public Health Nursing (PHN) within DDPHE. EPR duties may include emergency preparedness education and outreach efforts, assisting with the review and development of emergency management plans, participating in preparedness exercises and trainings, helping coordinate communications and resources across city departments and community partners, and assisting with emergency response activities as needed. PHN duties may include community health education, training and program development, sexual health, immunization, health prevention, field work to support street medicine. This position will work closely with DDPHE teams, city agencies, community organizations, and external partners.
The ideal candidate will be interested in emergency management, public health preparedness, community engagement, and public service. Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills are preferred. This position may require participation in occasional evening or weekend trainings, exercises, or emergency response activities depending on operational needs.

For the Denver Animal Protection position: The ability to work in an environment with various species of animals and interact with them on a regular basis, following appropriate training
Education requirement: Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate. Must enroll in a recognized apprentice program.
Experience Requirement: At least 18 years of age or older.
Education/Experience Equivalency: One (1) year of peer support or related job experience or volunteer work may be substituted for the high school education.
License/Certifications: None.
Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
Requirements to be completed after hiring:
Within 5 days of being hire, register with local Workforce Center at Connecting Colorado or update registration if currently registered with Connecting Colorado and email DDPHE verifying you have completed or updated registration with Connecting Colorado.
Within 45 after being hired, complete Apprenticeship Agreement and submit to Apprenticeship Sponsor. DDPHE will assist with completion of Apprenticeship Agreement and submitting paperwork to the Apprenticeship Sponsor.
Other mandatory requirements to be completed after hire.
