What’s the role
Shell is seeking a Production Operator – Upstream (also known internally as either a Plant or Field Operator) to join its team in Fort St. John.
Shell Canada’s Groundbirch asset is located approximately 70 km southwest of Fort St. John, British Columbia. It is an upstream Montney gas field that includes roughly 500 operating wells and four gas plants. Groundbirch is a key asset supplying feed gas to LNG Canada; we take pride in helping Canada deliver LNG to the rest of the world.
The Production Operator – Upstream is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of oil and gas production facilities. This role ensures production targets are met while maintaining strict adherence to safety, environmental, and regulatory standards.
In addition, this is a field-based role with exposure to varying weather conditions. The work schedule will be 7 days on/7 days off (12-hour shifts) or 8 days on/6 days off (10-hour shifts) depending on successful candidates best fit into the organization, including night shifts and on-call requirements.
Accountabilities:
Safe and Compliant Operations
Production Execution
Equipment Reliability & Maintenance
Conduct routine inspections, troubleshooting, and minor maintenance
Identify equipment issues early and initiate work requests for corrective action
Support planned maintenance activities, shutdowns, and turnarounds
Surveillance & Reporting
Record production data, field readings, and operational status accurately and in a timely manner
Maintain logbooks, shift reports, and digital reporting systems
Escalate abnormal conditions or equipment failures promptly
Continuous Improvement
Contribute to operational excellence through participation in improvement initiatives
Support root cause analysis and implement corrective actions (PDCA mindset)
Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance reliability
Team Collaboration
Work closely with Maintenance, Engineering, and Operations teams.
Participate actively in shift handovers, tailgate talks, and safety meetings
Contribute to a culture of psychological safety and inclusive teamwork
What you bring
Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
High School Diploma
4th class Power Engineer is a plus
At least 10 Years upstream operation and/or gas plant operating experience required
Experience in wellsite, gathering operations, and/or gas plant operating systems
Strong understanding of oil and gas production processes and equipment
Working knowledge of safety and regulatory requirements
Must be willing to work on-call shifts, including nights and weekends, with occasional overtime as needed
Willing to work outside in inclement weather
Willing to climb ladders, walk up and down steps, and work at heights
Willing to work a rotating shift work schedule
Comfortable working alone outside of normal business hours and/or with minimal supervision
Willing to be on call and meet call-out standards to respond to site responsibilities and emergencies
Willing to support and comply with the company’s safety policies and initiatives
Must have a Driver License

The hourly rate for this role pay range is $45.89 - $60.59 per hour. Individual pay will be based on various factors, such as relevant work experience, education, certifications, skill level, seniority, and internal equity.
