Naturalists perform interpretive duties, animal care, work with volunteers and lead related program work at Potomac Overlook Regional Park. Other responsibilities include helping maintain park grounds and facilities.
Pay Rate: $14.00 per hour / $15.00 per hour (hourly rate depends on tasks performed)
Major Duties/Specific Tasks
- Provide visitor information and answer telephone inquiries;
- Assist with preparation of exhibits and other interpretive materials;
- Assist with preparation and presentation of programs for school and public groups;
- Work with volunteers;
- Care for live animal exhibits and help maintain Nature Center, and grounds;
- Assist with maintenance of the facility and equipment: use equipment such as leaf blowers; collect and dispose of litter and trash; clean restrooms; dust, sweep and vacuum; plant and maintain trees/shrubs and planted beds; remove invasive plants; organize and help maintain organization of all programming materials and nature center;
- Perform other related work as required.
Minimum Qualifications
- At least two years of high school education in some natural resource field;
- 1 year of college preferred;
- General knowledge of biology and ecology;
- At least a basic knowledge of flora and fauna of Northern Virginia;
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with the public and staff members;
- Ability to prepare and present accurate reports;
- Ability to perform manual labor and to work in all weather conditions;
- Availability to work additional hours during peak operating times, holidays, nights and weekends;
- Possession of or ability to obtain valid VA driver’s license;
- Certification or ability to obtain certification in CPR and first aid and AED.
- Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of the position.
- Required to purchase and wear standard uniform.
