

JOB SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Senior Legal Counsel, Corporate Commercial, the Legal Counsel 2 provides practical, solutions-focused legal advice on a wide range of corporate commercial matters at Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH). The role has a primary focus on operational and commercial services agreements, procurement, technology, and research and innovation, supporting time-sensitive initiatives that enable the delivery of health care services across the organization.
This position involves drafting, reviewing, and negotiating a high volume of commercial contracts and advising leaders and teams on legal risk, compliance, and project delivery considerations. The Legal Counsel 2 works closely with internal stakeholders across clinical, operational, and corporate functions, and collaborates with other members of the in-house legal team to support VCH’s strategic and operational objectives. Experience with privacy and data-related matters is considered an asset.
As a Legal Counsel 2, Corporate Commercial with Vancouver Coastal Health you will:
Provide legal advice and transactional support on corporate commercial matters, including operational and commercial services agreements, procurement, technology, and research and innovation.Draft, review, and negotiate a broad range of commercial contracts and related legal documentation on behalf of VCH.Advise internal clients on legal risk, regulatory considerations, and contract strategy in a practical and timely manner.Support organizational initiatives by working closely with teams across clinical, operational, and corporate functions, including operations, finance, research, human resources, procurement, contract management, and risk management.Anticipate and identify legal issues and recommend strategies to mitigate legal, financial, and operational risk.Develop, maintain, and improve legal templates and standard terms to promote efficiency and consistency.Instruct and manage external counsel as required on transactional and specialized matters.Contribute to a collaborative, respectful, and high-performing in-house legal team.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education & Experience
Law degree from a recognized university, supplemented by four (4) to eight (8) years of recent experience practicing in corporate commercial or business law, or a related area.Member in good standing with the Law Society of British Columbia (or eligible for membership within a specified period).Demonstrated experience drafting, reviewing, and negotiating a broad range of commercial agreements.Experience in one or more of the following areas is a strong asset: technology and software agreements, innovation and research, public procurement, privacy and data security, or intellectual property.Previous experience in-house, in the public sector, or in the health sector is an asset.
Knowledge & Abilities
Working knowledge of the legal and regulatory framework governing public sector organizations in British Columbia, or the ability to develop that knowledge quickly.Ability to provide timely, practical, and risk-based legal advice to decision-makers and internal stakeholders.Strong judgment and the ability to manage multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.Ability to collaborate effectively with a diverse range of internal clients, including clinical, operational, and corporate teams.Strong legal research, analytical, and drafting skills.Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to build and maintain positive working relationships.Demonstrates personal integrity and accountability, while contributing positively to a collaborative, high-performing team environment.
