Are you our next Backend or Frontend Developer Student Assistant?
Will you join the Commercial Data & Software Engineering team?
As one of the premier coating companies in the world, Hempel contributes to the decarbonization of the shipping industry and, increasingly, to the sustainable transformation of the energy and infrastructure sectors through a combination of premium products and innovative digital solutions. Hempel’s Commercial Data & Software Engineering team utilizes data gathered from the entire world fleet alongside inhouse models, to help shipowners make more economically sound and environmentally friendly decisions when managing their fleet.
We are now extending the same data driven approach into the energy & infrastructure sector through a new platform currently in development. With an ever-increasing demand for easily accessible insights, we are looking to expand our team with two talented student assistants - one with a primary focus on frontend development, and one with a primary focus on backend development.
Want to help decarbonize shipping and strengthen critical energy and infrastructure assets through data and digitalization?
As part of the Commercial Data & Software Engineering team, you will have the opportunity to be part of the modernization of the Energy and Infrastructure (E&I) industry by contributing to the development of a new data platform over a 1½-year period.
You will work with cutting edge digital tools to optimize and mature our data handling and loading processes, build user-facing functionalities for both platforms, and help shape how data is delivered to internal and external users. The two roles are distinct, but will work closely together. Whichever role you join, there will be opportunities to step across the line between frontend and backend depending on your interest, the project’s needs, as well as your evolving skill set.
The two positions will be specifically focused on either frontend development or backend development.

Position 1 – Student Assistant, Frontend Developer

Develop and maintain frontend functionality for the E&I dataplatform, primarily using TypeScript/JavaScript
Draft up design ideas for the platform in Figma or other design applications
Translate design and product requirements into clean and responsive interfaces
Connect frontend components to backend APIs and ensure data is presented clearly and reliably
Contribute to image annotation work support our ML models
Collaborate closely with the backend developer in the team, with the option to take on backend tasks as your skills and interest develop
What do we look for in you?
Demonstrable experience with TypeScript and/or JavaScript, and with at least one modern frontend framework
A solid understanding of HTML, CSS, and how modern web applications are structured
An eye for usability and an interest in how design decisions affect the end user
Nice to have: exposure to Node.js, Python, SQL, and/or having worked with REST APIs
Position 2 – Student Assistant, Backend Developer
Your primary focus will be the systems behind the scenes, e.g. the data pipelines, APIs and infrastructure that power our platforms.
What will your main tasks be?
Support backend development for our Node based web applications, including API development and integration
Develop and connect web based APIs serving internal and external users
Take ownership of data and digital tooling projects supporting the new E&I data platform
Contribute to image annotation work supporting our ML models
Collaborate closely with the frontend student assistant developer as well as other developers, with the option to take on frontend tasks as your skills and interest develop
What are we looking for?
Demonstrable experience with one or more backend-relevant languages — Python, Node.js, and/or SQL, and with a genuine interest in working with data at a scale
An understanding of how to design, build and maintain APIs
Nice to have: experience with Databricks, Spark/PySpark, TypeScript/JavaScript, and/or modern cloud computing frameworks such as Databricks
What do both roles share?
Regardless of which position you join, you will:
Be given a meaningful level of responsibility and the opportunity to make a real, lasting impact
Work with a modern stack and a wide range of digital tools
Contribute to image annotation work that feeds our machine learning training data, alongside your development tasks.
Be based in Hempel’s headquarters in Kgs. Lyngby, where the Commercial Data & Software Engineering team sits. Our team is part of the broader Commercial Transformation & Technology department.

Demonstrable skills in any programming language, preferably >2 years of experience picked up through education, work, hobbies and/or personal projects, but exceptional candidates from other backgrounds will also be considered
Curious by nature, and able to combine structured logic with creativity when facing new problems and tasks.
The ability to work independently, but with a clear sense of your own limits – and not being afraid to ask for clarification or assistance when needed.
Enrollment in a university or other educational institution related to STEM or programming, preferably with 2 or more years left of study.
