The Personal Trainer is responsible for building and maintaining a client base that contributes to departmental revenues while providing exercise training to fitness center members and guests.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Duties
Conduct client interviews and consult with members on exercise recommendations based on fitness evaluations as well as members’ needs and goals.
Orientate new fitness center members: describe benefits and provide instruction on proper use of all equipment; discuss personal training services, special events, or other offerings available to members.
Perform physical assessments including: health history, body composition, sub-max bike or treadmill evaluation and flexibility exam.
Know member names and ability levels.
Assist members in monitoring their exercise programs, encourage members to reach their fitness and wellness goals, and handle member concerns and complaints quickly and effectively.
Maintain awareness of member’s medical history as it pertains to personal training and ask appropriate health related questions
Perform follow-up physical assessments (body composition) as requested.
Actively market and promote personal training to acquire new members and retain existing members.
Instruct assigned group and small group classes to the ability of the guests/members from beginner to advanced and provide modifications as needed.
Promote safety programs with fitness center guests, members and staff.
Effectively communicate important information to Fitness Manager including but not limited to customer feedback, accidents, safety concerns, maintenance issues, broken equipment, program and resource concerns as needed.
Promote special events, discounts, or offerings to members and guests.
Maintain accurate records, including tracking sessions and payments.
Ensure that any equipment used during training sessions is picked up and stored properly.
Act as an advocate for the fitness center products and services at all times.
Be available and willing to substitute for training sessions when necessary and when schedule permits.
Customer Service
Monitor health of all guests/members; be aware and prepared to deal with emergency health issues in accordance with Park District policies. Special sanitation procedures are to be taken in the event of some illnesses, see policy 3.4 in the Comprehensive Policy & Procedures Manual for details.
Initiative
Assist with special events and programs.
Have a thorough understanding of the Park District policies, procedures, and operations and enforce them in a positive manner. Other duties, responsibilities and activities may change or be assigned at any time with or without notice.
Communication
Listen attentively to others, ask clarifying questions, actively listen, stay open to other viewpoints, manage distractions and interruptions.

Technical Skills
Attend professional conferences, workshops and seminars within budgetary parameters and with Fitness Manager’s approval to keep current with fitness trends.
Understand specialty equipment, keep knowledge up-to-date, be a technical resource for others, follow technology practices and standards.
Teamwork
Work as a team player with co-workers and in conjunction with other departments.
Attend staff meetings and in-service training sessions as required.
QualificationsEducation & Training
- Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent
- Associate Degree in the field of exercise science or a related field preferred.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
- Certified by NSCA, ACSM, NASM, ACE, or equivalent.
- Obtain and maintain first-aid certification within 90 days of employment.
- Obtain and maintain adult CPR/AED certification prior to start of classes.
