Job Title: Process Engineer
Summary:
The Process Engineer is responsible for ensuring that production casting processes are being performed as designed and quoted as well as offer assistance to the Engineering and Production team when needed for process verification, continuous improvement activities or optimization of the process
Performance Expectation
- Develop high-pressure die cast process manufacturing parameters for aluminum castings such as PQ2, gate velocity, correct tonnage, metal pressure, plunger diameter, etc.
- Interface with design personnel at development stage to suggest designs that will improve efficiency and reduce cost. Develop cost down ideas-no amount is too small.
- Be responsible for supporting die designs, set up samples and trial evaluations, including replacement dies or new model dies
- Study quality issues to determine root cause-approve and confirm countermeasures.
- Introduce all measures necessary to maintain best possible standards and process-reliable conditions in a highly automated, high-pressure die casting process.
- Assist with casting parameters to reduce the number of rejects and achieve daily production targets.
- Identify and implement Kaizen safety initiatives. Support departmental LPA and safety Audits.
- During die changes the process technologist need to ensure that all the procedures were followed in order to have a successful startup
- Interface with tooling engineers to review tooling design and ensure the company standards in the die cast dies and trim dies.
- Capability to analyze casting simulation software using MAGMA or equivalent.
- Availability to troubleshoot quality issues in die cast machines working together with process technicians.
- Support cell design with manufacturing engineer to ensure the correct process flow.
- Working together with suppliers to design dedicated spray manifolds for new projects.
- Good comprehension of die casting standards (NADCA).
- Monitoring die cast performance.
- Good understanding of casting tolerances and GD&T.
- Support emergency breakdowns (calls after hours/weekends sometimes are expected).
- Train and develop process technicians and other Engineers as required.
- Support during startup and process development for new casting programs.
- Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
- Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
- Adhere to IATF/TS16949 and applicable customer standards.
Credentials
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or comparable engineering discipline.
Desired Characteristics
- Technical - Must be proficient in 2D drawing, 3D CAD design, GD&T, geometric and statistical stack-ups and manufacturing processes. Familiar with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
- 5+ years of experience with Aluminum and/or Magnesium High Pressure Die Casting (HPDC) preferably within the automotive field.
- Knowledge of production tool design, aluminum material grades and properties.
- Ability to provide design for manufacturing support to guide product engineers during advanced engineering & design phases.
- Exceptional understanding of the interactions between the high-pressure die casting process conditions (e.g. die temperature, die & tip lube application, shot profile, etc.) and the properties of parts.
- Experience transitioning products from concept to production.
- Experience using statistical process control and root cause analysis in a high pressure die casting manufacturing plant.
- Communication - Ability to read, analyze and comprehend detailed technical drawings and specifications. Ability to create supporting reports through PowerPoint. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, suppliers and customers. Provide daily product design task leadership and distribute work according to project requirements and resources.
