Position Summary The Maintenance Supervisor II is responsible for overseeing daily mechanical, electrical, and facility maintenance activities to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of mine equipment and infrastructure. This role supervises maintenance personnel, coordinates planned and corrective work, and ensures compliance with MSHA, mine, and environmental regulations. The position supports equipment reliability by prioritizing work orders, optimizing maintenance schedules, and minimizing downtime. Maintenance Supervisor II works closely with operations and planning teams to align maintenance activities with production goals, while promoting a strong safety culture and continuous improvement. This role is also accountable for workforce development, effective communication, and maintaining accurate maintenance records to support operational performance and cost control.
Supervisor Responsibilities This position has direct supervisory responsibility for Maintenance personnel.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities • Supervise, coordinate, and monitor routine maintenance of all mining equipment. • Oversee facility maintenance activities to ensure safe and reliable operation of site infrastructure. • Coordinate activities for welding crews, mobile crane operators, and rigging crews; provide training as needed. • Ensure timely availability of parts and materials for maintenance work. • Maintain equipment records, analyze performance, and report on maintenance effectiveness. • Collaborate with operations to maintain equipment while supporting production goals. • Balance workforce demands, assign work, and approve timecards. • Set performance expectations and address employee performance issues. • Consistently prioritize safety and environmental responsibility in both office and maintenance operations. • Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and safety regulations. • Lead toolbox meetings and conduct routine shop and site inspections. • Perform related duties as assigned.
Typical Physical Demands • Requires prolonged sitting with occasional bending, stooping, and stretching. • Frequent data entry for extended periods. • Manual dexterity and eye–hand coordination sufficient for equipment checks and maintenance tasks. • Requires adequate hearing and vision to prepare, review, and communicate reports effectively. • Rely on sharp visual and auditory skills to monitor operations, review reports, and ensure quality performance. • Mobility sufficient to travel as needed.
Typical Working Conditions Work involves both office and active mine site environments, requiring compliance with all safety and environmental standards and occasional evening or weekend work. Occasional offsite travel may be necessary depending on assigned duties.
Education and Experience • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field from an accredited college. • Minimum five (5) years of related work experience. • Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience that demonstrate the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
Licenses, Registration, and Certifications • Colorado Surface Mine Foreman Certificate, or ability to obtain it within 3 months preferred. • Trades Certificate preferred. • Must possess a valid driver’s license through duration of employment. • Must meet all insurability requirements as specified by Westmoreland’s policies or Driver’s insurance provider.
