The Senior Java Backend Developer is responsible for designing, developing, maintaining, and supporting high-quality backend services that are robust, scalable, and aligned with business requirements.
This role contributes to the architecture and implementation of Java-based applications, following best practices and Agile methodologies.
As part of a dynamic, international team, you will collaborate closely with Architects, Product Managers, and other stakeholders to drive innovation and continuously enhance Global Blue’s Tax-Free Shopping and Currency Choice solutions.

Design, develop, test, deploy, and support custom backend service applications.
Contribute to the architecture and implementation of Java applications using clean coding principles and best practices.
Research and evaluate software-related technologies and products.
Implement standards, procedures, and quality and delivery methodologies across the full software lifecycle.
Ensure compliance with documented software processes and procedures.
Work within an Agile team setup of 6–10 members, actively contributing to team delivery.
Coordinate with Enterprise Architects, Development Leads, and Product Managers to define appropriate functionalities and technical implementations.
Maintain and enhance existing applications to improve performance, scalability, and reliability.

Skills
University degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent) in Computer Science, MIS, or a related technical field, or relevant technical education.
8–10+ years of experience in a professional software development environment.
Excellent understanding of Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) concepts and principles.
Strong Java backend development skills, including hands-on experience with Spring (Spring Boot) and Hibernate
Experience with build and dependency management tools such as Maven.
Experience working with Apache-based application/web servers.
In-depth experience designing REST APIs and implementing backend services.
Strong understanding of Software Design Patterns and Enterprise Design Patterns.
Hands-on experience with Agile software development methodologies, ideally in a multi-division or international environment.
Experience with testing and CI/CD practices, including TDD and automated unit, functional, and integration testing.
Solid experience with MS SQL Server or similar databases, particularly in performance-related areas.
Strong English communication skills (oral and written) in a professional, technology-driven environment.
Qualifications and education requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field.
Senior-level software development experience with a proven delivery track record.
Strong understanding of backend architecture, scalability, and performance optimization.
Experience working in Agile teams within complex, enterprise-level environments.
Preferred qualifications
Knowledge of internet security concepts.
Experience in the payments industry (credit cards, merchant processing, banking, financial services).
Experience with CI/CD and automation tools such as Jenkins.
Hands-on experience with messaging systems such as RabbitMQ.
Experience with the SAS platform or willingness to learn and develop new features on it.

📍 Budapest, Hungary - Hybrid model: 2 days per month in Vienna's Office
