The Opportunity: The Calgary Herald newsroom has an immediate opening for a storyteller who will create a deep connection with fans of the Calgary Flames. The successful applicant will be able to think outside the traditional sports news box, pioneering a coverage style that is engaging, encourages participation with readers, and exercises personality. Postmedia's Calgary newsroom is the largest in the city, with committed, supportive and professional co-workers, opportunities for mentorship and professional development.
What you’ll do: • Work within a collaborative newsroom environment to establish a unique a differentiated connection with fans of the Calgary Flames through a combination of reporting, storytelling, content development and digital and real-life engagement.. • Write short and longform stories that rouse Calgary's most devout hockey fans and keep them coming back for more. • Thrive in a fast-paced, competitive landscape to produce distinctive, insightful journalism that shines on all platforms, from digital to print, and from video to emerging social media. • Play a key role in developing and executing digital strategies that doesn't just amplify your work and bring readers closer to the action, but directly integrates the fan. Think: newsletters, reader experiences, Q&As, videos podcasts, emerging social media and more. • Build a following with your unique personality, dedication to hockey and commitment to telling stories no one else is telling, all of which contributes to the understanding of the Flames' place in the fabric of the city.
Who you are: • You live and breathe hockey, have deep empathy for the ups and downs of the fan experience and a healthy interest and skepticism about the NHL and its teams — and a desire to connect fans with their passion in a new way. • You have meaningful storytelling experience, with a proven track record working under deadlines to produce high-level, professional written content. • You are a collaborative teammate who is not afraid of trying new things. • You are adaptable, coachable, curious and unafraid of asking difficult questions. • You are willing to work flexible hours, understanding that sports often take place during the evening and on weekends. • You have an interest in sports that extends beyond the field of play — into the business, issues, conflicts and personalities that shape a professional sports team. You will have interest in developing expertise and breaking stories surrounding the under-construction event centre in Calgary and its impact on the city. • You are passionate about journalism and obsessive about accuracy. • Good interpersonal, communication and organization skills • Ability to lift/push/pull up to 50lbs repetitively • Available through the week and/or weekends • Ability to work up to 12-hour shifts • A journalism degree or significant work experience in digital storytelling. • Experience working in a high-pressure environment with many stakeholders. • A valid driver’s license and car. • Digital experience will set the successful candidate apart. Compensation: Employment offers presented to the selected candidate are based on a combination of qualifications, experience, responsibilities of the role and the candidate's location. Base Salary: $60,000-75,000
