Marine Pilot

Job Level: 4 Reports to: Harbour Master
PURPOSE
- Under supervision of the Harbour Master, this position ensures the safe handling of vessels in and out of the port.
- The position is also responsible for efficient planning of marine movements to optimise berth utilization, safe handling of vessels, and effective use of tidal windows.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

- Carry out pilotage services to ships in a safe and efficient manner.
- Take responsibility for ensuring that adequate marine maintenance carried out as directed.
- Carry out Ship's Husbandry and Health and Safety checks on board Company chartered or owned Marine crafts.
- Following guidelines laid down by the company, Port and other external bodies, keep all paperwork accurate and up to date.
- Manage trainee Pilots.
- Keep records of work performed.
- Participate in a roster system with the other Pilots to maintain cover on a 24-hour basis.
- Build working relationships with Tug crews, port authorities and agents and take part in operational meetings with customers as and when required.
- Ensures that appropriate direction, control and discipline is applied to all vessels that call within the port boundaries, including conventional craft, barges, dhows, fishing crafts, naval and police boats to ensure their safety and safety of the Port.
- Ensures that effective communications are in place and operating between the Port and vessels.
- Participates in any emergency requiring Marine Department support, as appropriate.
- The key impact of these incumbents will be the maintenance of operational efficiencies to ensure smooth vessel movement at the Port

WORK/BUSINESS CONTACTS AND AUTHORITY

Staff in Marine & Operations Division at various levels on a regular on going basis
Vessels/Shipping Lines/Agents, Coast Guard, Port Authorities, Marine Police, etc.
Nature of contact is primarily for giving & receiving information & in most cases will be for the achievement of a common objective
CRITICAL QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS/EXPERIENCE
(IPE Factor: Knowledge)
- Requires at least a high school diploma. Should have Master F.G certificate with sailing experience as Master.
- Also required are STWC certification, sea survival certificate & fire-fighting certificate
- Requires at least two years pilotage experience in handling large ships within harbor areas, utilizing conventional and tractor tugs. Working knowledge of tug operations is desirable.
- Must be thoroughly familiar with all types of vessels that call at port.
- Requires ability to analyze all marine situations.
- Requires advanced level of verbal and written communications skills in English.
- Requires ability to submit accurate and detailed reports.
- Requires good interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with colleagues.
- Must be able to exercise good judgment in order to set priorities.
- Must have the ability to train potential pilots, tug master and crews in all marine operations.
- Must be able to operate radio communications equipment and vessel traffic management systems.
LEARNING & CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
In this position, the incumbent will have an opportunity to acquire skills and knowledge in the following areas:
- Exposure to overall terminal operations.
- Must undergo local pilotage training, as specified in port training manual, before taking charge as independent piloting. He will follow all up gradation procedures.
