Thungela Resources [Thungela means “to ignite” in isiZulu] is a leading South African thermal coal business, focused exclusively on thermal coal production.  It is one of the largest pure-play producers and exporters of thermal coal in South Africa based on aggregate coal reserves and marketable coal production. Thungela focuses on exporting its thermal coal portfolio mainly to the Indian, Asian, Southeast Asian, Middle East and North African markets.

Job Description

• Legal responsibility for all activities under his/her control regarding safety and effective cost management
• Overseeing processes relating to coal production, contractor management, road building, blasting, pumping of water, ventilation, belt inspections and Continuous Improvement within the department
• Ensure all Codes of Practice and Standard Operation Procedures are understood and adhered to
• Ability to plan, co-ordinate and control activities
• Previous experience in a supervisory capacity
• Be able to cope with pressure, be innovative & a self-starter
• Good communication, interpersonal and supervisory skills with strong administrative skills

Qualifications

• Grade 12 certificate or equivalent
• Valid blasting certificate for fiery mines
• Continuous Miner Certificate

Additional Information

• 3+ years’ experience as a faceboss or 1 year with a mining degree
• Knowledge of flame proofing and gas
• Solid knowledge of Mine Health and Safety Act and keeping up to date with any changes to the Act.
• 3 months acting experience as a shiftboss or previous appointment as a shiftboss
• Safety and Risk Management Course
• Conflict Management Skills
• Decision Making Skills
• Problem solving skills
