General Description of Class
Under general direction performs laboratory animal care and the maintenance of appropriate research conditions, performs specialized technical services for investigators.
Typical Duties
The following illustrative tasks indicate the level of skill required and the extent of responsibility involved in this job. They in no way limit the incumbent to the tasks indicated. Flexibility of the employee to perform a wide variety of functions is necessary in successfully fulfilling the requirements of this position. The degree to which each employee performs each of the following tasks listed below will vary according to where and when the employee is scheduled to work.
(a) Performs special husbandry needs required for animal experiments and disease control such as managing valuable colonies of transgenic mice, gene knockout and immunodeficient mice; responsible for establishing rodent breeding colonies, maintaining records, providing technical support involving identification, sampling for DNA analysis, anesthesia, injections and blood sampling.
(b) Recognizes and implements appropriate housing for specialized colonies.
(c) Maintains specialized containment equipment such as biological safety cabinets and ventilated racks.
(d) Instructs in species specific teaching modules.
(e) Implements strategies for problem breeding colonies.
(f) Trains research personnel in technical and husbandry related areas to ensure the highest standards of animal care are met.
(g) Wears personal protective equipment as appropriate.
(h) May perform the duties of a Veterinary Technologist I and; Other related duties as required.
