Main Purpose of the Role:
We are looking for a strong, strategic, and hands on Head of PMO to lead and evolve our delivery function in a fast paced, high impact fintech environment. This role is responsible for ensuring projects are planned, governed, and executed with the right balance of discipline, transparency, agility, and risk control.
Operating in complex and high ambiguity environments, the Head of PMO drives teams from assumptions to validated facts, ensuring delivery plans are credible, evidence based, and capable of standing up to executive, customer, and audit scrutiny. This role plays a critical part in shaping delivery success across large scale, business critical projects used by millions of people across South Africa.
Key Responsibilities
PMO Leadership & Governance:
Lead and continuously improve the organization's end to end Project Delivery Stage Gate Process.
Oversee project intake, prioritization, approvals, governance, and delivery progression across all phases.
Ensure governance is applied effectively and pragmatically to support delivery excellence, accountability, and auditability.
Executive, Commercial & Customer Engagement:
Partner closely with internal and external executives to shape delivery commitments and strategic priorities.
Balance commercial opportunities with delivery capacity, financial impact, and execution risk.
Provide clear, fact based insights and recommendations to senior leadership, including go/no go input on delivery commitments.
Build strong relationships with senior customer stakeholders, particularly within government and public sector environments.
Lead and manage complex escalations and high pressure delivery situations with confidence and professionalism.
Delivery, Planning & Financial Management:
Work closely with Project Managers and delivery teams to drive successful project outcomes.
Ensure risks, dependencies, and constraints are identified early and managed effectively.
Remove delivery blockers, drive corrective action, and strengthen accountability while avoiding unnecessary bureaucracy.
Own portfolio level planning, capacity, and demand management to ensure delivery commitments remain realistic, scalable, and achievable.
Oversee delivery related financial governance, including forecasting, revenue recognition, cost to complete, and financial risk management.
People Leadership & PMO Capability Development:
Lead, mentor, and develop a high performing PMO team, including Project Managers, Project Administrator, Finance Administrator, and Scrum Master.
Build a culture of accountability, collaboration, continuous improvement, and delivery excellence.
Continue maturing and scaling the PMO by embedding consistent, repeatable, and high impact delivery practices.
Establish portfolio prioritization models, reporting standards, performance metrics, and career development pathways across the PMO function.
AI Adoption & Delivery Recovery:
Champion the adoption of AI enabled tools and intelligent automation to improve productivity, governance, planning, and decision making across the PMO.
Drive innovation while ensuring strong delivery discipline and control.
Lead intervention and recovery efforts for distressed or high risk projects, stabilizing delivery environments and restoring stakeholder confidence.
