Spence’s Performing Arts Department seeks an accomplished and visionary educator to join the school’s music program as Orchestra Director. This role requires an understanding of the importance, scope, and impact of performances within the school community. The Orchestra Director will collaborate closely with Performing Arts colleagues to advance the department’s mission of nurturing imagination and self-expression in a collaborative environment. We believe that active participation in and exposure to the arts broadens horizons, fosters empathy, and enriches students’ lives both at Spence and beyond.
Responsibilities
Conduct three Middle and Upper School orchestras
Direct and produce two instrumental performances annually
Oversee the care and maintenance of school-owned instruments
Collaborate with music faculty across divisions to coordinate and implement curriculum
Partner with school leadership and the Performing Arts Department on major events
Manage NYSSMA participation
Attend faculty, departmental, and team meetings
Fulfill assigned divisional duties and responsibilities
Promote and elevate the visibility of the orchestral program within and beyond the school community
QualificationsQualifications
Sustained experience teaching and conducting at the Middle and/or Upper School level
Demonstrated enthusiasm for working with students and contributing to school life, with a collegial and positive presence
Commitment to engaging with and learning from diverse perspectives and experiences
Proven ability to collaborate effectively and contribute to the professional growth of a team
Ability to work across departments, fostering collaboration among faculty, staff, and administration
Strong project management, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituents
Advanced degree in music or a related field, or equivalent professional experience
Experience managing budgets and program resources
Excellent communication skills
Flexibility, a strong team ethic, and a sense of humor
