We're looking for an experienced Leading Hand Gardener and help shape beautiful, safe spaces for our community!
Mō te tūranga | About the role
As Leading Hand Gardener, you’ll be at the forefront of our grounds maintenance and landscaping operations, ensuring our public spaces are attractive, safe and well cared for. You will lead a small, dedicated team responsible for maintaining garden beds, street plantings and parks across the city, planning and coordinating day-to-day tasks to keep everything looking its best.
This role will see you working hands-on alongside your team, providing guidance, coaching and support while also monitoring quality, health and safety, and efficient use of resources. You’ll help schedule and prioritise work, liaise with your supervisor and other teams as needed, and contribute ideas for improving our planting, maintenance practices and seasonal displays.

Organise and coordinate daily operational activities according to contract requirements and client expectations.
Operate and ensure proper care of gardening equipment and machinery in line with company policies.
Support the induction, training, and development of new and existing team members.
Kei te kimi mātou i tētahi e whai ana i ēnei pūkenga | We're looking for someone with
Level 3 Horticultural qualification (or equivalent experience).
Growsafe certificate preferred, or solid hands-on spray application experience.
Current full Class 1 driver licence, with the ability to confidently drive a manual vehicle.
Demonstrated experience in grounds maintenance, landscaping and horticulture.
Strong practical knowledge of gardening tools, equipment and machinery.
Excellent plant knowledge, supported by proven experience in a public garden or similar environment.
Strong ability to prioritise tasks, solve problems, make sound decisions and take ownership.
Able to work safely alongside traffic, with many gardens and beds located on or near streets.
Flexible and adaptable – comfortable with planned work as well as reactive tasks as they arise.
Good level of physical fitness and able to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
