JOB SUMMARY
Perform professional work in support of scientific research using technical knowledge of software, software development, networking, and/or hardware in a complex computing environment. Subject matter expert in multiple areas of computing technology, and specific knowledge of molecular biology and genetics. Works collaboratively with Principal Investigator ("PI") to determine the most suitable computational methods and tools to analyze large-scale biological data sets. Prepare reports for presentation or publication. Responsible for assisting PI in meeting the system needs for multiple research projects and/or labs.
WHO WE ARE:
The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center a world class biomedical research institution. Based in the Division of Cardiology, our research group focuses on understanding the development of heart failure using cardiac imaging and translational ‘-omics’ technologies. You would be part of a dynamic, diverse, international team applying the latest methodologies in high-dimensional data analysis and statistical learning to quantitative cardiac imaging, high throughput proteomics, and clinical outcomes. The objective of our work is to uncover novel insights into heart failure pathobiology, and ultimately inform approaches to prevent and treat this common and life-threatening condition.
IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL:
- Hold a graduate degree in computational biology, bioinformatics, biostatistics, data science, computer science or a related quantitative field and have a strong background at the interface of molecular biology, computation, and clinical research.
- Have strong research design and analytical skills, and a passion for translational medical research
- Be intellectually curious and motivated to go beyond routine analyses by helping generate new ideas. You are an independent thinker who is self-motivated, but can still collaborate with ease.
- Be highly organized, have precise attention to detail, and demonstrate professionalism and respect for subjects’ rights.
- Have excellent time management/organizational skills, with ability to multitask and assign priorities in a busy environment.
- Have excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills for working with a diverse study team.
- Have excellent English oral and written communication skills.
- Have knowledge of clinical research principles, with strong research design skills, analytical skills, and database statistical skills.
- Have experience and knowledge of computational principles. Proficiency with Python and/or R is strongly preferred.
- Have experience with statistical modeling and machine learning in biomedical data analysis would be a plus.
GENERAL SUMMARY:
Functioning very independently and under the general direction of principal investigator, this individual performs high level, complex research activities. The computational biologist should have experience in molecular biology, bioinformatics, and computer science and be highly motivated and able to learn new analytical skills. This individual will work collaboratively with clinical investigators, biostatisticians, and epidemiologists. This individual may also contribute to scientific literature, reports, journals and presentations. There will be as-needed training in all required tasks initially and throughout their employment with our group.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop scalable and reproducible computational workflows for processing omics data and related biomedical datasets. This will include (1) building pipelines for proteomic, metabolomic, and other high-throughput datasets; (2) optimizing and maintaining computational infrastructure and data management workflows; and (3) ensuring reproducibility through version control, documentation, and containerized environments.
- Collaborate with clinical investigators, biostatisticians, and epidemiologists to formulate testable hypotheses and to translate computational findings into biologically meaningful insights that inform clinical investigation and/or experimental validation. Participation in interdisciplinary project design, generating analytic plans and data interpretation is essential.
- Create publication-quality data visualizations to support study analyses. Working with the PI, biostatistical collaborator, and other study staff, determine and generate appropriate data visualizations to support data analyses.
- Implement best practices in data management, reproducible research, and computational documentation, including maintenance of well-annotated code repositories and analytical
- pipelines. Ensure compliance with institutional policies regarding data security and human subjects research.
- Contribute to the training for on-boarding research assistants/new data analysts and new research fellows vis-a-vis relevant software and analysis coding
- All other duties, as assigned.

JOB DUTIES
- Manage research laboratory computer hardware and software programming and maintenance. Ensure existing systems meet the continuing needs of the lab and/or recommend and test new systems as necessary.
- Perform complex data analysis related to specialized research methodologies and results as assigned by the PI.
- Develop and/or modify software to support new and ongoing research projects.
- Resolve hardware, software, and network issues in support of the lab.
- Develop and maintain complex databases to support new and ongoing research projects.
- Train laboratory staff in the use of pertinent research systems.
- May specialize in bioinformatics, software development, network administration, or hardware/software maintenance.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
