JOB DESCRIPTION
Provide senior clinical leadership and strategic direction for the 24/7 medical triage hub, supporting global travel insurance policyholders. Ensure all triage, medical assistance, and repatriation decisions meet the highest clinical and ethical standards, and act as the senior responsible clinician for quality, safety, and governance across the hub.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Governance, Quality & Safety
- Chair or co-chair clinical governance committees, adverse incident reviews, mortality and morbidity reviews, and equivalent forums
- Lead and oversee clinical audit cycles, significant event analyses, and implementation of resulting improvements
- Develop, review, and ratify clinical policies, protocols, and standard operating procedures
- Maintain working knowledge of CQC, GMC, and relevant NHS/private sector regulatory frameworks
- Apply Duty of Candor, safeguarding principles, and professional accountability in all clinical decisions
Clinical Leadership
- Provide remote clinical triage, telephone/video clinical consultation, and evidence-based decision-making for complex and acute presentations without physical examination, both within the UK (GEAR activations) and internationally.
- Manage complex, multi-morbidity cases across a broad range of acute and chronic presentations
- Oversee medical assistance and repatriation decisions, including fitness-to-fly assessment and coordination with aeromedical teams where required
- Liaise with overseas hospitals, treating physicians, insurers, policyholders, and repatriation services globally
- Postholders may occasionally be required to provide remote or face-to-face consultations with patients in the UK who require pre-travel assessment and advice.
- The postholder may be required to provide medication reviews and/or recommend medications for travelers outside the UK.
Leadership & Management
- Lead, develop, and appraise a multidisciplinary clinical team including doctors, nurses, and paramedics
- Contribute to board-level and executive reporting on clinical performance metrics and patient safety
- Conduct appraisals and support revalidation for clinical staff in line with GMC, HCPC, and NMC requirements
Education, Training & CPD
- Maintain ongoing CPD and personal revalidation in compliance with GMC requirements
- Design and deliver clinical education and competency assessment for medical and paramedical staff
Commercial & Operational Awareness
- Apply understanding of travel insurance policy structures, medical assistance operations, and cost-containment principles
- Balance clinical imperatives with commercial and operational constraints without compromising patient safety.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- MB ChB (or equivalent) — full GMC registration with a license to practice
- Fellowship or Membership of a relevant Royal College (MRCP, MRCS, FCEM, MRCGP, or equivalent)
- CCT or equivalent in Acute Medicine, Emergency Medicine, General Internal Medicine, or Primary/Urgent Care
- Substantial experience at Senior Registrar (ST6+) or Consultant level in Acute, Emergency, or Urgent/Primary Care
- Demonstrable experience chairing or co-chairing clinical governance committees, clinical and case reviews, audits, or equivalent.
- Track record of leading clinical audit cycles, significant event analyses, and implementing improvements
- Experience developing, reviewing, and ratifying clinical policies, protocols, and standard operating procedures
- Working knowledge of CQC, GMC, and relevant NHS/private sector regulatory frameworks
- Understanding of Duty of Candor, safeguarding, medicolegal and clinical negligence, organizational and professional accountability within a UK regulatory context
- Proven ability to lead and appraise a multidisciplinary clinical team in a 24/7 operational environment
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills in English; ability to convey complex clinical information to non-clinical stakeholders
- Understanding of travel insurance policy structures, medical assistance operations, and cost-containment principles
- Commitment to ongoing CPD and design/delivery of clinical education programs for medical, nursing, and paramedical staff
- This is a part-time (0.2 WTE) position. The SPS Global Response Center (GRC) operates 24/7, 365 days. Hours of work for this role are currently daytime only. This position may be assigned on-call duties (subject to agreement with the postholder) and rotational responsibilities in line with operational requirements and growth.
- Occasional travel may be required for clinical governance, leadership forums, or operational site visits. Travel requirements may include international deployment to support complex cases or operational reviews.
- This role operates in a 24/7 medical triage center environment, utilising telephone, video, and digital case management platforms. The postholder will regularly make clinical decisions without physical examination, often under time pressure and in complex, cross-jurisdictional contexts.
- The role involves liaison with overseas hospitals, treating physicians, insurers, repatriation teams, and policyholders across multiple time zones and in resource-variable settings.
- Must be able to legally work in the country where this position is located without visa sponsorship.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Postgraduate qualification in medical leadership, management, or healthcare quality (e.g., MBA, MMedEd, PGCert)
- Diploma in Travel Medicine (DTM) equivalent qualification or experience.
- Pre-hospital, aeromedical, or retrieval medicine accreditation (e.g., FPHM, FIMC, DMCC)
- Experience working in overseas, resource-limited, or austere environments (humanitarian, military, expedition, or offshore medicine)
- Familiarity with aeromedical evacuation and repatriation, including fitness-to-fly assessment and medical escort
- Experience in international assistance company operations, or equivalent global medical coordination role
- Tropical medicine knowledge or experience working in low- and middle-income countries and/or austere healthcare settings
- Familiarity with ISO 9001 or equivalent quality management systems in a healthcare or commercial setting
- Experience supervising postgraduate trainees or undertaking educational supervisor roles
- Published research, audit, or quality improvement outputs in a peer-reviewed forum
- Proficiency in one or more additional languages (particularly Spanish, French, Arabic, or Mandarin)
- Experience contributing to product development, claims review, or underwriting guidance from a clinical perspective
- Familiarity with digital health tools, telehealth platforms, and electronic case management systems used in assistance operations
