Help us create a better future, quicker
Under the direction of the Data Protection Manager, the Data Protection Lead will support the SPEN Data Protection Team in delivering an effective and proactive data protection programme.
The role is central to ensuring the protection of SPEN’s information assets across all areas of the business, including where the handling and processing of personal data is undertaken by third‑party suppliers.
What you’ll be doing
In this role, you will advise on data protection matters, including supporting contract negotiations and reviewing relevant business and legal documentation, while ensuring SPEN meets its Article 30 GDPR obligations through accurate Records of Processing Activities.
You will carry out initial Data Protection Impact Assessments, support Legitimate Interest Assessments where required, and recommend proportionate risk‑mitigation actions with guidance from the Data Protection Manager.
In post you will also support data protection training and awareness activity, monitor data protection KPIs and escalate issues to the Data Protection Officer as appropriate.
Acting as a point of contact for data subject rights, you will work collaboratively across SPEN to support data incident investigations, contributing to root‑cause analysis and the completion of appropriate mitigating actions.
What you’ll bring
You will be a confident data protection professional, able to work autonomously while recognising when escalation is required. You will have experience advising on data protection aspects of contracts and business or legal documentation, along with the ability to interpret regulatory requirements and apply them effectively in a practical business context.
Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential, together with the ability to build effective relationships with stakeholders at all levels, both locally and globally. You will be comfortable resolving complex issues, influencing outcomes and driving positive change.
You will bring a sound understanding of IT processes, information security and technology risk, supported by strong analytical and investigatory skills and in‑depth technical knowledge of data protection. Experience in risk management, mitigation and remediation is essential, alongside a proven track record of advising diverse stakeholders on data protection matters.
An industry‑recognised data protection qualification is desirable, as is experience within the energy or utilities sector. Legal qualifications or legal training would be advantageous but are not essential.

As well as a competitive salary which is reviewed annually, you can also enjoy a number of other benefits. With our pension scheme, we’ll double match your contribution up to a company contribution of 10%.
