We are currently hiring an Engineering Manager to be based in either Finland, Germany, Poland, Spain, Sweden, UK, Italy or Netherlands. The preferred locations are Finland & Germany.
Your mission at Epassi
As an Engineering Manager for our user-facing experiences, you will lead a cross-functional team of 3–8 engineers building services spanning areas such as onboarding, benefits surfaces, discovery, activity rewards, or our B2B employer and merchant portals. Your team works at the intersection of product, design, and engineering, shipping features that are used directly by customers, and the 13,000+ fitness and wellness partners across our network. Your main objective is to build a high-performing, collaborative team, maintain a high bar for quality and delivery, and help your engineers grow. You will work closely with your Product Management and Design to shape your team's roadmap, translate user and business needs into great software, and ensure your squad has the clarity and momentum it needs to deliver. As Epassi consolidates its brands under one unified platform, you will play a meaningful role in building the product that brings that vision to life for millions of customers across Europe.
Your responsibilities will be:
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of 3-8 software engineers through all phases of the employee lifecycle in cooperation with People and Culture and the Head of Engineering.
- Drive a positive team culture aligned with Epassi’s values, motivating the development team and promoting collaboration.
- Coordinate effective communication and collaboration within your team and across departments, including Product Owners and other Engineering teams who consume your platform services.
- Drive technical execution and delivery of platform roadmap initiatives, ensuring quality, timeliness, and alignment with business objectives.
- Establish and maintain engineering standards, best practices, and coding standards for the fullstack codebase of your vertical (React, React Native, Java/SpringBoot) that scale with team and domain growth.
- Own the reliability and quality of your team’s services, including API contracts, SLAs, and documentation.
- Remove blockers and create an environment where engineers can do their best work.
- Recruit, interview, and hire top software engineering talent while building a diverse and inclusive team culture.
- Collaborate closely with Product, Design, and Staff Engineers to define technical requirements and implement future-proof architectural decisions, supporting and guiding the team through organizational changes.
- Communicate progress, risks, and technical decisions to the Head of Engineering and stakeholders.
- Promote automation, CI/CD improvements, and the use of modern tools and techniques within and across teams.
- Leverage AI-native development tools and workflows (e.g., Copilot, Cursor, Claude) to accelerate delivery, improve code quality, and set the standard for AI-assisted engineering practices across the team.
You’ll be successful in this role if you:
- Ship major product initiatives that drive measurable business outcomes and contribute directly to company goals.
- Successfully hire software engineers within your first year who meet or exceed the hiring bar, building a diverse pipeline.
- Receive consistent positive feedback from Product partners and UX partners, building a reputation as a trusted technical advisor.
- Conduct regular high-quality 1:1s and mentor team members, supporting at least one promotion annually.
- Hit committed quarterly initiative goals, maintain predictable sprint velocity with under 15% rollover, and proactively communicate risks in advance.
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement and learning in your team.
- Communicate company goals clearly and align team efforts accordingly.
What you should bring:
- Completed technical degree or equivalent qualification.
- 5+ years of software engineering experience with a hands-on development background, ideally across backend with Java/Springboot and/or frontend with React or React Native.
- 2–3+ years of experience leading cross-functional engineering teams consisting of backend, web, and mobile engineers — with accountability for delivery, quality, and team growth.
- Strong technical foundation across Java backend, React Native, and React Web
- Experience with cloud infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines, and modern DevOps practices.
- Familiarity with microservices architecture, RESTful API design, and working effectively as a consumer of shared platform services
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate technical context clearly for product, design, and business stakeholders.
- Proven experience leading and motivating development teams.
- Demonstrated ability to hire, develop, and retain engineering talent.
- Strong background working within agile development frameworks.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
