The requirements
Qualifications and Experience:
- Degree in Library and Information Science plus a teaching qualification.
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in teaching and/or managing a school library, preferably in an IB or international school setting.
- Teachers Service Commission (TSC) registration certificate.
- Proficiency in current technologies including but not limited to Microsoft Office packages.
- Strong knowledge of information literacy, research methods and academic integrity.
- Proven skills in cataloguing, classification and library systems management.
- Experience in collection development, budgeting and resource planning.
- Ability to design and deliver engaging library lessons.

The position
The Aga Khan Education Service, Kenya (AKES, Kenya) operates five schools in Kenya and provides nursery to senior secondary education in both national and international curricula. It is part of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), a group of private development agencies working to improve living conditions and opportunities for people of all faiths and origins in specific regions of the developing world.
The Aga Khan Academy, Nairobi (AKA, Nairobi) is an IB continuum school in Kenya authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate curriculum (IB) from Early Years through the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), and the Diploma Programme (DP). With over 1000 students, AKA, Nairobi is a multi-cultural school with a variety of nationalities represented in our student and teaching faculty.
The Aga Khan Academy, Nairobi - Junior School has an opening for the position of: Teacher Librarian.
Role Summary
The Teacher Librarian is responsible for creating and sustaining a dynamic, inclusive library environment that enhances student learning, literacy and research capabilities. The role ensures access to diverse, high-quality resources that support the IB curriculum and foster a culture of reading, inquiry and academic integrity. Working collaboratively with the team of staff, the Teacher Librarian integrates information literacy into teaching and learning while promoting lifelong learning habits.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and manage a well-organized, relevant and engaging library collection.
- Oversee cataloguing, classification, inventory and resource maintenance.
- Plan and manage the library budget and acquisitions.
- Teach information literacy, research skills and reading programmes.
- Collaborate with teachers to integrate library resources into the curriculum.
- Promote academic honesty, copyright awareness and ethical resource use.
- Encourage student engagement in reading and library programmes.
- Communicate with parents and students on library matters.
- Ensure smooth daily operations of the library.
- Maintain accurate records of all library resources and textbook distribution.
