The Senior Engineering Manager of Developer Experience is a people-first engineering leader responsible for building, scaling, and continuously improving the tools, practices, and environments that enable engineering teams to do their best work. This role spans three interconnected disciplines: Developer Experience (DevEx), Quality Engineering, and Performance Engineering.
The Senior Engineering Manager partners closely with platform and product engineering leaders to reduce friction across the software development lifecycle, raise quality and reliability standards, and embed performance thinking from the ground up. They lead and grow a high-performing team of engineers, set a clear roadmap for developer productivity, and champion a culture of engineering excellence across the organisation.

Set clear goals and expectations, conduct regular 1:1s, and support career development and progression for direct reports
Foster a culture of psychological safety, ownership, and continuous improvement within and across the teams
Partner with recruiting to attract and retain top engineering talent as the team scales
Own financial governance and budget control across DevEx teams, ensuring cost transparency, optimisation, and accountability.
Developer Tools & Experience
Define and drive the roadmap for internal developer tooling and productivity infrastructure, including IDPs, CI/CD pipelines, local dev environments, and self-service capabilities
Measure and improve developer experience through DORA metrics, developer satisfaction surveys, and productivity signals
Collaborate with platform teams to reduce onboarding time, cognitive load, and toil for engineering teams
Champion the adoption of tools and standards that improve developer velocity and satisfaction organisation-wide
Quality Engineering
Oversee the strategy and execution of quality engineering practices across the engineering organisation, including test automation, shift-left testing, and quality gates in CI/CD
Drive adoption of automated testing frameworks and ensure quality is embedded throughout the software delivery lifecycle
Define and track quality KPIs and work with teams to improve test coverage, defect detection rates, and release confidence
Performance Engineering
Lead the performance engineering function to ensure systems are designed, tested, and monitored for scalability, reliability, and efficiency
Establish performance testing practices (load, stress, soak) and integrate them into delivery pipelines
What you’ll bring
Engineering Leadership: 8+ years of engineering experience with 4+ years in an engineering management role; proven ability to lead multi-disciplinary engineering teams and deliver against a technical roadmap
Developer Experience & Tooling: Strong understanding on improving developer productivity through internal platforms, tooling, and developer portals (e.g. Backstage); familiarity with DORA metrics and developer experience frameworks

Performance Engineering: Understanding of performance testing methodologies (load, stress, soak testing) and tooling (k6, Gatling, JMeter, or equivalent); experience integrating performance testing into delivery pipelines and working with teams to address bottlenecks
Communication & Influence: Strong ability to communicate technical strategy and progress to senior stakeholders; skilled at influencing without authority and building alignment across teams
People Development: Proven track record of mentoring engineers and building healthy, high-performing team cultures; experience running effective 1:1s, performance reviews, and growth conversations
