The Shot Blast Machine Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of shot blasting equipment to clean, prepare, and finish fabricated steel components to the required quality standards prior to painting, galvanizing, or further processing.
Key Responsibilities
Operate shot blast machines to clean steel components in accordance with production schedules and specifications
Load and unload components using cranes, forklifts, or other lifting equipment as required
Inspect blasted parts to ensure surfaces meet quality and cleanliness standards
Carry out routine machine checks and basic maintenance, including media levels, wear parts, and housekeeping around the machine
Identify and report machine faults, breakdowns, or quality issues to supervisors or maintenance
Adhere strictly to all Health & Safety, Manual Handling, and Safe Systems of Work (SSWW) procedures
Maintain a clean, organised, and safe working environment at all times
Work closely with fabrication, welding, and painting teams to ensure smooth workflow
Accurately complete production and quality documentation where required

Use PPE correctly and report any safety concerns or near misses immediately
Follow quality standards and inspection requirements to ensure components meet customer and project specifications
Skills & Experience
Essential:
Previous experience operating shot blast machines or similar industrial equipment
Good understanding of workshop safety practices
Ability to read basic drawings or work instructions
Physically capable of handling heavy steel components safely
Strong attention to detail and quality
Desirable:
Experience in a fabrication or structural steel environment
Overhead crane and/or forklift license
Familiarity with surface preparation standards (e.g. SA 2 / SA 2.5)
Basic mechanical or maintenance awareness
