Job Description Summary
Lead the development, qualification, and continuous improvement of forgings, structures, and balance of plant components for GE Vernova power generation equipment. As a Materials Application Engineer, you will go beyond traditional component-level metallurgy by utilizing systems thinking and digital transformation tools to ensure Gas Power hardware performance leads the global energy transition. You will blend hands-on metallurgy with modern modeling and data analytics to deliver safe, reliable, and cost-effective hardware.
Job Description
Essential Responsibilities:
- Lead research and development program activities on new materials and processes to support new product introductions.
- Analyze process–structure–property relationships using process modeling (e.g., DEFORM) or CALPHAD tools (e.g., Thermo-Calc), and data analytics
- Perform root cause and corrective action analyses to troubleshoot problems with current designs and manufacturing processes. Using findings to drive corrective actions and prevent future issues by influencing solutions through cross-functional teams
- Lead qualification and development efforts for power generation components manufactured from forgings and bar stock including critical rotating hardware utilized in industrial gas turbines, steam turbines, generators, and plant support systems.
- Work together with cross-functional teams to perform supplier assessments, identify qualification requirements, and execute supplier qualifications which meet production fulfillment schedules.
- Plan and conduct material property testing programs. Interpret results and issue technical reports on the findings.
- Identify and implement cost reduction opportunities through new processing methods and alternate materials.
- Control and improve quality of components by creation and revision of specifications.
Qualifications/Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
- Minimum 4 years of relevant engineering experience
- This role requires use of technical data subject to U.S. Government export restrictions and this posting is only for U.S. Persons (U.S. Citizens, lawful permanent residents and protected individuals (e.g., certain refugees and asylees)). Proof of status required prior to employment
Desired Characteristics:
- Proven metallurgical experience with Steels, Titanium, and Superalloys with emphasis on melting, forging, fabrication, machining, finishing, and inspection.
- Systems Thinking: Ability to seamlessly integrate processing requirements and material properties into the broader power island architecture and product requirements.
- AI as Standard Work: Leverage tools like Amp and Python-based data analytics to enhance MPE effectiveness through automation of routine reporting, agent assisted review of quality documents, and predictive process–structure–property relationships.
- Embrace Lean principles to reduce operational complexity, streamlining the qualification and development of forged components to improve Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost.
- Collaborative Teamwork: Working within high-performing teams to solve complex, interdisciplinary challenges that require a balance of metallurgical technical depth and system-wide breadth.
- Supplier Partnership & Leadership: Lead supplier assessments and qualifications, embedding consistent standards of expertise, accountability, and decision-making throughout the global supply chain.
- Technical Innovation: Use Integrated Computational Materials Engineering methods such as DEFORM, CALPHAD (Thermo-Calc/JMatPro), and process modeling to design process windows and optimize material processing windows.
- Mentorship and Skill Development: Embrace a rapid mutual learning culture, partnering with cross-team and cross-domain engineers to share expertise and broaden your technical experience and enhance your capabilities across different turbine, generator, and plant system platforms.
This role requires access to U.S. export-controlled information. If applicable, final offers will be contingent on ability to obtain authorization for access to U.S. export-controlled information from the U.S. Government.
