We are seeking an experienced HVAC and Ventilation System Engineer
to lead the design and development of safety-critical ventilation systems for
nuclear facilities. You will work within one of our engineering teams in a
multicultural and multidisciplinary stimulating environment, where you will be
responsible for establishing the complete design framework—from deriving
top-level requirements from international codes and standards through basic and
detailed design phases.
This role requires deep expertise in translating regulatory
guidelines (IAEA, SSM, and other nuclear codes) into actionable system
requirements while applying rigorous systems engineering principles to ensure
safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance.
What we do at Blykalla
Blykalla is developing the next
generation of nuclear technology with our Small Modular Reactor (SMR) based on
innovative fuel, materials, and reactor designs. As Sweden’s only SMR
developer, we are on a mission to decarbonize industries and enable safe,
scalable, and sustainable energy solutions. Our technology uses uranium nitride
fuel and lead coolant, creating novel challenges and opportunities for the fuel
cycle and supporting systems.
What you’ll get to do
As an HVAC and Ventilation System Engineer, you will play a key
role in leading the design and integration of nuclear ventilation and HVAC
systems, ensuring safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance throughout all
design phases. You’ll collaborate with cross-functional teams and regulatory
bodies to develop systems that meet the highest safety standards for nuclear
facilities. Your key responsibilities would be:
Requirements Development &
Regulatory Compliance
- Derive and establish system
requirements from international guidelines and nuclear standards (IAEA,
SSM, ASME AG-1, etc.).
- Interpret and translate
regulatory requirements into functional, performance, and safety criteria.
- Ensure compliance with nuclear
safety classifications, QA standards, and maintain traceability throughout
the design lifecycle.
System Design & Architecture
- Lead conceptual, basic, and
detailed design of nuclear ventilation and HVAC systems.
- Develop system architectures,
pressure cascade concepts, and zoning strategies for confinement.
- Define filtration and
ventilation configurations, including HEPA and carbon filtration systems
for normal and emergency operations.
System Engineering &
Integration
- Perform system-level trade-off
studies to balance safety, reliability, and cost.
- Coordinate HVAC integration
with other safety systems such as containment and fire protection and
ventilation.
- Apply MBSE methods and manage
technical data, documentation, and configuration control.
Safety Analysis & Risk
Management
- Conduct FMEA and HAZOP analyses
for ventilation and confinement systems.
- Evaluate performance under
normal, accident, and beyond-design-basis conditions.
- Support Verification &
Validation (V&V) activities and safety reviews in accordance with
nuclear standards.
Technical Documentation &
Project Management
- Develop and maintain
comprehensive technical documentation, including system design
descriptions, design basis documents, P&IDs, flow diagrams,
single-line diagrams, and safety analysis reports.
- Manage change requests,
configuration control, and versioning across the project lifecycle.
- Prepare technical reports and
presentations for regulatory bodies, safety committees, and stakeholders.
- Communicate complex concepts
clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Collaboration & Leadership
- Collaborate with
cross-functional teams including reactor engineers, safety specialists,
structural engineers, and regulatory affairs
- Work closely with regulatory
authorities during design reviews and licensing processes
- Provide technical guidance and
mentorship to junior engineers and design teams
- Manage multiple projects and
meet deadlines in a highly regulated environment
